Job Description

The Cancer Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin seeks a talented science writer to join our dynamic and growing team. The successful candidate will be an excellent writer who thrives in a fast-paced state-of-the-art academic medical center environment. You will be a key contributor to two key areas of our translational science enterprise: clinical trials and research development. For investigator initiated clinical trials (IIT) you will work with clinicians and clinician scientists and members of our clinical trials office (CTO) to edit and write portions of IIT protocols. On the research development side, you will edit and write a variety of documents including grants, manuscripts and philanthropic case statements. This is a stimulating and rewarding opportunity to have an impact on improving the therapies available to cancer patients while also being involved in advancing the basic and translational projects that make such treatment breakthroughs possible. Your primary attribute will be excellence in written scientific communication coupled with a strong drive and love of collaborative work in a high-energy environment. It is helpful but not necessary that you have a life sciences background and prior exposure to some combination of academic medical center, clinical trials and associated documentation, written science communications, NIH- or DoD-sponsored medical research, cancer research, grant writing, and (INDs).
Primary Functions:
Generate original text and materials by collecting, organizing, interpreting, and classifying information for research and reporting purposes.
Research and analyze a variety of technical, statistical, medical, and scientific material ensuring the accurate preparation of documents; this includes reviewing grants and investigator initiated trials (IIT) prior to submission to funding agencies or regulatory review.
Coordinate the IIT Steering Committee and submission of IITs.
Ability to mentor faculty on their writing skills to increase the funding success rate.
Assume role of project manager for writing assignments which include project planning, time management, keeping other team members informed and on task, and submitting finished project on time and in specified format.
Provide backup for submission of Investigational New Drug Applications and progress reports as needed.
Assure compliance with regulatory and institutional policies.
Participate in the development of program resources through literature searches, contact with outside programs, and review of funding opportunities.
Participate on appropriate committees relevant to the advancement of the program and the profession or area of research.
