This is a full-time, fiscal year tenure-track faculty appointment with management and supervisory responsibilities as the Department Head of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The Department Head provides leadership, management, planning, and advocacy for faculty and programs within the unit.

The Division of Humanities (DoH) consists of four academic departments: Communications, Graphic, and Fine Arts, Languages and Literature, Mathematics, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The division accounts for 52% of full-time faculty, and over 100 adjunct faculty. While DoH’s core function is general education, the division is home to 35 academic transfer programs, three Associate of Applied Science and two certificate programs, preparing students for entry into the workforce. In support of the local and regional focus on eradicating the top societal ills of Memphis, the DoH leverages existing academic programs in the “helping professions” and integrates the research and scholarly best practices to help support the City of Memphis’ Memphis 3.0 Strategic Plan. The division’s contribution to workforce development is social, emotional, psychological, and foundational skills development. While the attainment of a credential is the ultimate goal of higher education, we also aspire to have civically engaged, culturally aware, and emotionally healthy citizens.

Reporting to the Dean of Humanities, the department chair supports division’s goals by providing leadership, innovation, management, and advocacy for the Social and Behavioral Sciences department. The department chair can articulate a vision for social justice, equity and addressing academic gaps for underserved communities and underrepresented student populations in an urban, community college setting. The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge and a keen understanding of high impact practices, faculty development, and supporting student and faculty success in high enrollment, gatekeeper courses. The candidate can also demonstrate a track record of data collection and program and student learning outcomes assessment.

This role will be responsible for the following:
Essential Job Functions:

Evaluates programs; networks with community agencies by serving on various committees/boards and conducts professional development activities.
Supervises the development of Institutional Effectiveness departmental plans; resolves student, faculty, and staff problems to the extent possible.
Supervises all evaluation and personnel academic activities conducted by the department.
Prepares and delivers lecture on one (1) course per semester.
Serves on division and college wide committees; collaborates with area colleges to articulate programs.
Develops and monitors departmental budgets including grants, goals and plans; and develops class schedules each semester.
Facilitates curriculum development; the hiring of full-time and adjunct faculty; and makes teaching assignments each term.
Supervises curriculum implementation.
May perform other duties as assigned.
