Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Miller, Beckstead and Freeman Labs are seeking applicants to manage the respective lab's mouse colonies for studies in muscle and brain aging and disease. Primary duties will include maintaining mouse colonies, including husbandry of genetically-modified lines, monitoring mouse treatments, interacting with animal facility staff, and PCR genotyping. Secondary duties are varied and may involve performing behavioral assays, ordering supplies and reagents, performing immunohistochemistry on mouse tissue sections, and other supportive lab duties. The respective lab environments are highly supportive of learning other approaches including techniques for molecular biology and proteomics, sequencing, electrophysiology, and bioinformatics. Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences or veterinary studies sciences or equivalent years of professional, paid, relevant laboratory experience. Must be skilled in performing standard animal procedures (including handling and genotyping of mice) and have at least one (1) year experience with mouse colony management. Advanced computer skills (or the ability to learn those skills) are necessary, including data acquisition, Microsoft Office, order processing, and methods for backing up data. Excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and adherence to strict deadlines required.

Bachelors Degree

Work Hours: Typically Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm, but must be willing to work occasional overtime, weekends, and/or holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in the biological sciences. Three (3) years of relevant research-related experience is preferred. Responsible and highly motivated individual with mouse colony management experience, including mouse mating, handling, euthanasia, and dissection. The ideal candidate would have some knowledge of mouse genetics, demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly with scientists and staff from labs throughout OMRF, and will be proactive about identifying ways to streamline lab operations. Candidates with a background in physiology, metabolism, skeletal biology, or neuroscience are preferred.

Physical Demands:
Regularly required to stand, use manual dexterity, talk or hear; Frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms; occasionally sit; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; vision abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, or rodent dander. May work with toxic, caustic chemicals, radioactive materials, liquid nitrogen, human tissue or blood. Potential risk of electrical shock. Occasional exposure to cold 4C, and/or extreme cold -80C from freezers. Noise level is usually moderate.
