Job Description

We are seeking a Year Round - R&D Undergraduate Intern to join our dynamic team! We anticipate a combination of on site and off site work for this position, depending on current regulations. On any given day, you may be called on to perform any of the following: On site work, including: + Assist staff, postdoctoral appointees and/or graduate students in electrochemical/corrosion experiments and testing + Process experiment and test data using software such as MatLab, Origin, EC-Lab, etc. + Document experiment details and results in report, presentation, or peer-reviewed publication form Offsite work, including: + Categorize and input data from previous ongoing projects related to additive manufacturing into a materials database + Process experiment data + Perform scientific literature searches to learn the current state of the art in corrosion-related sciences + Document experiment details and results in a report, presentation, or peer-reviewed publication : This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Required:
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements: + Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program + Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major + Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 + Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer + U.S. citizenship

Desired:
In order to excel in this position, the ideal candidate will have the following desired qualifications: + Currently pursuing a degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field + Experience with chemical handling, corrosion, general electrochemistry, mechanical testing, metallurgy, and/or metal additive manufacturing techniques + Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite + Familiarity with MatLab, Origin, EC-Lab or other data processing software

Department Description:

The reliability of devices, components, and ultimately systems is directly affected by the properties and interactions of their constituent materials. The prime goal of the Materials Reliability Department is to ensure that effective materials-related information is provided to customers who design and field high-consequence hardware, such that long-term reliability will be attained. Our department's R&D activities focus on the needs of Sandia's Nuclear Weapons program customers. We also provide support to customers in other areas including Energy and Environment and National Security Programs. We have expertise in gas/solid interactions, corrosion and electrochemistry, and the aging and mechanical properties of ceramics, glasses and other brittle materials. We provide this expertise and support to our customers during all phases of design, production, storage, use, and retirement.
