Job Description

Serve as the primary academic advisor to approximately 350 – 450 upper-division students holding academic majors in the Miller College of Business (MCOB); support students in understanding and meeting academic requirements; assist students in maintaining state-mandated four-year degree maps; promote strategies for student success; advise transfer students on program requirements and course equivalencies; serve as a referral agent to other university services; facilitate communication between assigned students and all MCOB departments; participate in appropriate events as requested by all the Departments in MCOB, the Office of Admissions, and the Office of Orientation.
The Upper Division Advising Center within University College at Ball State University welcomes applications for the position of Academic Advisor from individuals who are passionate about helping undergraduate students discover their unique strengths, interests, and purpose. Working under the direction of an Academic Advising Coordinator, the candidate will manage an assigned caseload of students to provide comprehensive academic advising that supports business majors pursuing campus-based degree programs in Muncie, Indiana.

The Academic Advisor will assist the Department of Accounting, Department of Economics, and the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management and will guide students in understanding their degree requirements, academic policies, and university procedures to make informed decisions within their degree program.

The Academic Advisor will also interpret Miller College of Business and Ball State University policies and procedures regarding enrollment, major selection, course sequencing, and degree requirements. Academic Advisors at Ball State University willl utilize student development and retention theories to enhance advising practice, serve as a contact person and academic resource for new, prospective, and continuing students seeking a business degree in Accounting, Economics, and Business Analytics, and actively participate in annual student events such as Orientation, Transfer Visit Day, and Preview Day.

Job Function:

Minimum Education:

Master’s degree by date of appointment.

Preferred Education:

Master's degree in student affairs, accounting, economics, business analytics, or related area.

Minimum Experience:

One year of experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or related field.

Preferred Experience:

Experience in a higher education environment; familiarity with Ball State curriculum; familiarity with Banner, Degree Works, and Aviso.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Meet with an assigned load of approximately 350 – 450 upper-division students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues such as course planning and registration, major-specific requirements, and academic progress.
  • Keep up-to-date information on university academic requirements, policies, and procedures as outlined in the Undergraduate Catalog and in departmental handbooks.
  • Provide support to students in maintaining individualized four-year degree plans as mandated by the State of Indiana.
  • Train students to interpret the Degree Works degree audit.
  • Participate in appropriate admissions and orientation events; serve as a departmental liaison for new transfer students; work collaboratively with academic departments to assist in the evaluation of transfer course equivalencies.
  • Promote strategies for success with students including time management, study tips, and participation in tutoring and supplemental instruction sessions; provide an additional intervention with assigned students on academic probation.
  • Create advising reports as requested by the Miller College of Business administrators and Department Chairs using Banner, Argos, and Degree Works.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty in providing effective advising services to assigned students
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and administrators in assessing student success in major-level courses and implement strategies for success.
  • Meet with potential students and their families to discuss the undergraduate programs in the Miller College of Business.
  • Serve as a referral agent to other university resources and services.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
