Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time. : We are seeking a hardworking and driven Post-Doctoral Appointee to join our dynamic team to grow our capability to analyze complex multi-physics problems in the areas of nuclear security and high consequence environments. Related subjects are nuclear energy, risk assessment, vulnerability analysis, and threat assessment. The selected candidate will have a theoretical understanding of high security environments, proficient programming skills, and the desire to seek funding opportunities through writing proposals. On any given day, the selected applicant may be called on to: + Develop, verify, validate, and use physics-based computational models to solve complex security or integrated safety-security problems + Write proposals to secure funding + Work with a mentor one-on-one or in small teams + Document results in high-quality presentations and reports + Explore growth areas such as risk-informed security, integrated safety-security modeling, and the application of machine learning to security technologies with sparse information or data Travel is required for this position.

+ PhD acquired within the last 2 years', in physics, physical sciences, engineering, applied mathematics, or a technical related field + Experience in computational modeling and simulation of security or nuclear power plant systems + Experience in assessing high security environments + Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance

+ High level of academic success in undergraduate and graduate programs + Knowledge in dynamic risk assessment methods, thermohydraulics, security sensor physics, and advanced reactor concepts + Experience with dynamic probabilistic risk assessment tools and software + Experience with parallel programming in computing environments + Experience with V&V techniques and uncertainty quantification methodologies + Proven ability to perform independent research, as well as to work effectively in a team in various roles (leader and group member) + Proficiency with varied communication methods, including oral presentation, preparation of high-impact visual presentations, written reports, and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate scientific and technical information at a level tailored the audience

Department Description:

The mission of International Nuclear Security Engineering (INSE) department is to improve the security of vulnerable stockpiles of nuclear weapons and weapons-usable nuclear materials worldwide by providing technical expertise to the National Nuclear Security Administration's International Nuclear Security (INS) Program (NA-211). INSE is the principal organization providing engineered solutions to physical protection system analysis, design, and installation as well as implementation of nuclear security best practices and technical exchanges for the INS Program. INSE is also leading the development and operation of the Integrated Security Facility (ISF) at Sandia National Laboratories. The ISF provides a unique venue for physical protection, nuclear materials management, and nuclear safety training, demonstration, and equipment testing/evaluation to domestic and international partners.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
