We are seeking a motivated and innovative R&D, Director in the CBRN Defense & Energy Technologies Center comprised of three groups and thirteen departments with approximately 220 staff, technologists and postdocs working at three geographically distributed locations - Albuquerque, NM, Emeryville, CA and Livermore, CA. The selected Director will manage the work to perform exploratory science and develop technology to address pressing national needs in energy security, homeland security, and national defense. Through extensive partnerships inside and outside Sandia, the Center is bringing together an integrated suite of solutions for improved countermeasures against biological threats, alternative transportation fuels, and engineering sciences. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Build Sandia's scientific and technical capabilities in biology and engineering science to support and anticipate the needs of all of Sandia's program management units. + Develop strategy and vision for bioscience and engineering science for the Division and Laboratory by coordinating a team of department and senior managers to fulfill a range of operational and programmatic responsibilities, build partnerships between CA and NM organizations in bioscience and engineering science to strengthen Center programs, and create an organizational culture that promotes performing work safely and securely. + Perform a leadership role for Sandia's Bioscience Research Foundation and the Bioscience LDRD Investment Area. + Maintain strong Center relationships with the International, Homeland and Nuclear program management unit and the Energy, Climate and Infrastructure Security program management unit in support of the biological defense and energy programs in the Biological and Engineering Sciences Center. + Participate in and provide leadership for the Reducing Global Chemical and Biological Dangers and Secure and Sustainable Energy Future Mission Areas. + Develop a strategy and vision for Rad/Nuc initiatives in 8600 and partner with NM organizations to develop a roadmap for future program success. + Support technology maturation efforts through the Advanced and Exploratory Systems departments to design and develop threat informed future ND concepts and weapon architectures. + Cultivate a strong relationship with our LLNL partners for various mission related activities : This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. + Master’s degree or above in biological sciences, physical sciences or a related field with 10 plus years of relevant experience; Or equivalent education and experience combined. + Eight or more years of managerial experience, including leading and directing managers and complex organizations. + Successful program development, particularly with relevant sponsors such as DOE, DoD, DHS, DTRA, NIH, NNSA, IARPA or DARPA. + Previous involvement in and proven ability to continually improve the Center's commitment to diversity and inclusion. + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

+ PhD in biological sciences or related field. + Knowledge/experience with DOE, NNSA, DoD, DHS, and/or NIH sponsors. + Experience with Biological Select Agents and BSL-2 laboratory environments and associated regulations and protocols. + Experience working in nuclear security enterprise. + Extensive experience leading scientific research programs and in applying scientific research to strengthen the nation's security. + Demonstrated ability to build, energize, and lead large teams and programs across geographic, institutional, and organizational boundaries. + Proven ability to create and maintain a safe, secure, and effective environment for all work activities and employees. + Demonstrated effectiveness in leading and implementing business and organizational strategies as part of team to advance division goals and center specific goals. + Ability to obtain and maintain SCI level clearance.

Department Description:

Center 8600 performs exploratory science and develops technology to address pressing national needs in countering weapons of mass destruction, energy security, and nuclear deterrence and non-proliferation. Through extensive partnerships inside and outside Sandia, the Center stewards critical capabilities in biosciences, radiation sciences and systems engineering in support of energy and national security missions. The center comprises three groups- two focused on bio energy and chemical and biological defense, one each in California and Albuquerque, NM; and the third focused on advanced and exploratory weapons engineering and radiation sciences. The center has ~225 personnel including staff scientists and engineers, technologists, postdoctoral fellows, and student interns distributed in 3 geographical locations- Albuquerque, Livermore and Emeryville. Key sponsors include the DOE National Nuclear Security Administration, the DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research, the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the DHS, and Sandia’s LDRD program.

Security Clearance:
