You will work with Professor Iyiola Solanke, one other Postdoctoral Research Fellow, a Project Manager (within the Centre for Law and Social Justice) and an Administrator on an 18-month UKRI/ ESRC (BAME COVID Call) project – ‘Practices of Wellbeing and Resilience in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Families and Communities (Co-POWeR).
You will play a key role in this project, working closely with the Principal Investigator (Iyiola Solanke) to lead and deliver a large quantitative survey into the impact of COVID on BAME families and communities.
You will also work on elements of the Co-POWeR’s Work Package on ‘Emergency Powers’, which investigates these COVID Act powers to understand their impact on practices of wellbeing and resilience across Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic families and communities (BAMEFC). This work package will examine A) How emergency powers affect BAMEFC wellbeing and resilience during a pandemic, including those ‘hidden’, with irregular immigration status; B) whether they confirm pre-existing distrust of official advice and institutions among some BAMEFC groups, and cause others (such as those with irregular immigration status) to avoid official institutions, including those providing necessary healthcare and advice (WP5)? C) How emergency powers interact with public health objectives: do they induce civil compliance/disobedience with interventions to tackle COVID-19 eg. vaccinations?
You will also work with all team and consortium members to deliver other aspects of the project.
You will have a PhD at the time that your appointment commences or very soon afterwards; and an interest in work that is developed applying the values of co-production, and in applying this principle to work with people from BAME communities.
You will have a sound grasp of co-production principles and issues and proven experience of co-producing empirical research. You will also have proven experience of designing online questionnaires for use with BAME communities as well as of conducting focus groups with this cohort. You will understand and value community participation.
You will have skills to plan, organise and conduct research activities and fieldwork, collecting data including interviews with marginalised BAME young people as well as with local authorities, youth workers and police forces. You will have statistical and research management skills to synthesise, analyse and interpret this data.
Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work to deadlines are essential – as is the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently. Intellectual initiative, creativity and curiosity are also essential. You will be supported to develop research skills and multi-disciplinary expertise through training and support available through the School and University.
The post will involve online working and depending upon current COVID restrictions, may require some travel.
