Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time. : We are seeking a R&D S&E, Materials Science engineer/scientist to drive R&D within the Special Technologies department (5964). We conduct research, development, fabrication, testing, and delivery of embedded hardware solutions for high impact national security applications. Our multidisciplinary team seeks to expand the realm of what is possible using diverse teams to solve challenging problems. The ideal candidate will have wide ranging experience integrating materials science and chemistry within mechanical designs to solve challenging problems that are intrinsically multidisciplinary. A proven record of innovative solutions to challenging problems is a must have. A solid science background provides a foundation for evaluating cutting edge solutions to currently evolving problems. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Work with mechanical, electrical, RF, and embedded systems engineers, materials scientists, and chemists + Engage effectively across multidisciplinary R&D teams, programmatic managers and sponsors to collect requirements, develop vision, design solutions, and deliver innovative solutions to difficult problems + Coordinate multidisciplinary work across teams with specialties ranging from chemical modeling, microfabrication, electrical measurement, materials characterization, and device and circuit modeling. + Coordinate with or lead postdocs or technologists in a diverse and ever-changing environment. + Provide knowledge of emerging technologies to sponsors regarding the opportunities and challenges that they present

Required:
+ Master’s degree in Materials Science or relevant field plus 4 years of relevant experience + A proven track record of research/development project leadership, including experience successfully working with tactically focused Intelligence Community (IC) and DOD sponsors, managing sparse and sometimes conflicting requirements as well as quick response timelines + A proven track record of conducting and research/development within a team environment from concept to delivery + Demonstrated experience building diverse partnerships with SMEs and management across the Laboratories, as well as with external entities, to align capabilities and expertise with sponsors’ mission needs + Proven ability to generate new projects via successful proposals or white papers + You possess active DOE Q and SCI clearances

Desired:
Ideally, your background would also include: + Experience in conceptualization, material selection, design, fabrication, test, and delivery of customer prototype and deliverable hardware + Experience with CAD tools (Solidworks, Creo, GrabCad, etc.) + Hands-on experience with the operation and maintenance of fabrication and additive manufacturing equipment (3D printers, laser cutter/engraver, UV flatbed printers, hand tools, etc.) + Experience with packaging and encapsulation of electronic assemblies, to include material selection, mold design, precision mixing, degassing, etc. + Experience with graphic design programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, CorelDraw, etc.) + Successful track record of customer development and interactions + Ability to prioritize, manage, and execute multiple projects within appropriate scope, budget, and timeframe + Success in multi-functional teams to facilitate and drive integrated, multi-disciplinary solutions to complex operational problems + Demonstrated commitment to developing yourself and your skill set + Excellent social, communication, prioritization, and organizational skills

Department Description:

The Special Technologies Department (5964) is responsible for the delivery of a diverse set of embedded hardware solutions from concept to delivery to include design, manufacture, integration, and validation. 5954 performs design and analysis of mission-critical mechanical and electronics systems for various government agencies.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) SCI security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship.
