Job Description

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at University of Virginia is seeking highly qualified applicants for a Research Scientist position to work under the supervision of Dr. Nathan Swami within a joint project with the Center for Advanced Biomanufacturing or CAD-Bio – a university wide initiative with a centralized research core facility that is aimed at developing enabling technologies for regenerative medicine.

This research work is in the field of device design, integration, and measurement for application of microfluidics and biofabrication towards regenerative medicine. Specific lab duties include the maintenance of microfabrication and biofabrication equipment in the centralized facility; training and advising of researchers on device design and equipment usage; and development of novel microfluidic and biofabrication methods for in vitro studies with ex vivo tissues. Experience in troubleshooting instrumentation problems associated microfabrication (optical set-ups for lithography, vacuum systems, and device assembly) and biofabrication (3D printing, bioprinting and imaging systems) is essential. Other duties outside the lab include lab protocol maintenance, data analytics, attending research team meetings; co-advising Ph.D. students, helping co-write manuscripts for publication and formulation of ideas for grant applications. Incumbents will also receive support and mentoring in ways to improve research skills, the preparation of grant proposals, and responsible research practices.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Doctoral degree in an engineering or science discipline with the related training in microfabrication and bioengineering is required by the start date. Research experience in microfluidics (devices for cytometry and cell separation) using various force fields (hydrodynamic, dielectrophoretic, acoustic, etc.) is preferred. Outstanding interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and analytic skills are required. The candidate must be able to work in a lab environment and remotely from home, as necessary.
