An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced quantitative social scientist to contribute to a new study in the Centre for Employment Relations Innovation and Change (CERIC) in collaboration with the University of Manchester and the Fatherhood Institute. Funded by the ESRC’s Secondary Data Analysis Initiative, the study will explore how fathers’ childcare involvement influences children’s educational attainment as they progress through primary school using longitudinal data from the UK’s Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) linked with the secure administrative data from the National Pupil Database (NPD) in England. The aim is to identify whether, how and at what stage fathers’ childcare involvement may be most important for fostering children’s education relative to other factors that have been shown to affect educational progression such as gender and socio-economic status. The successful candidate will be based in CERIC - a leading research centre investigating the changing nature of work and employment and employment relations, housing a critical mass of internationally regarded researchers that produce intellectually challenging work with genuine policy and practitioner impact.
The project will involve the candidate working with secure administrative data from the NPD. They will be required to (i) explore and clean educational data within the UK Data Service’s secure lab environment; (ii) develop quantitative measures of educational attainment as well as (iii) quantitative measures of paternal and maternal childcare involvement using longitudinal data from the MCS. They will then use these measures in statistical analysis (e.g. regression and structural equation models) to predict educational attainment at different stages of primary school. The candidate will work directly with the PI to analyse the findings and evaluate the next steps for the statistical analysis. They will also be required to participate in consultation events with stakeholders and policy makers, to help contextualise the results, and present and discuss the findings. There will also be an opportunity to contribute to academic papers and stakeholder reports.
