Job Description

Perform duties necessary to the efficient operation of advanced chemistry laboratories; train instructors and students in the operation of chemical instrumentation; assist in the maintenance of chemical instrumentation.
The Department of Chemistry has a long history of focusing our efforts on giving our undergraduate and graduate students a high-quality learning experience in both the classroom and the laboratory settings. The university is completing construction of a new building for chemistry and biology which we will move into this summer.

Job Function:

Perform duties necessary to the efficient operation of advanced chemistry laboratories; train instructors and students in the operation of chemical instrumentation; assist in the maintenance of chemical instrumentation.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent, in chemistry or related field, is required by the start date.

Preferred Education:

Master's degree in a science field.

Minimum Experience:

Over one through three years of chemistry lab experience using chemical instrumentation; excellent computer skills; strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Experience:

Inventory experience; computer maintenance experience; supervisory experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the operation of a chemistry stockroom in a manner that provides the chemicals and equipment for research and teaching labs; evaluate utilization and anticipated contamination of chemicals; prepare order/request for chemicals; provide input into computer, equipment and apparatus purchase requests.
  • Supervise the preparation of reagents and solutions for use by students and faculty; analyze laboratory procedures and design suitable modifications; set up demonstrations.
  • Ensure safety and security of a stockroom, research labs and teaching labs; assist in safety training of lab personnel.
  • Interview, hire, train, assign and review work of technical student lab assistants; maintain schedules and time records.
  • Work with the Laboratory Manager to establish and maintain an electronic inventory system of all chemicals and apparatus in the stockrooms and in all research and teaching laboratories; serve as back-up to Laboratory Manager for ordering supplies and equipment.
  • Oversee the maintenance of the department's website.
  • Train and assist lab instructors, graduate students and chemistry students in the operation of chemical instrumentation as needed.
  • Set up and test computers and advanced chemical instrumentation (spectrometers, chromatographs, etc.) for chemistry laboratory experiments.
  • Inspect and perform routine maintenance of small laboratory equipment used in chemistry laboratories.
  • Order, receive and catalog chemicals and laboratory supplies for teaching laboratories and faculty and student research.
  • Facilitate and maintain a friendly learning environment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
