Working under the supervision of the Department Chair for Mechanical Engineering (ME), the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory Manager is responsible for managing and executing the operations of ME teaching lab facilities used in the undergraduate and graduate mechanical engineering education courses and to provide needed support for the ME faculty research lab facilities. The Laboratory Manager will work closely with the Department Chair and ME faculty members for the lab facilities to fulfill their role as part of an educational resource and research capabilities to the department. The Laboratory Manager will serve as a liaison between course coordinators, students, ME research faculty and various Stevens administrative offices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Manage and execute the operations of all Mechanical Engineering undergraduate and graduate teaching lab facilities, such as Thermal/Fluid Lab, Mechanical Systems Lab, Structural Design Lab, Manufacturing and Rapid Prototyping Lab, Measurement Lab and Senior Design Workspaces. Coordinate hiring, training, and management of Student Lab Assistants. Ensure all ME teaching facilities provide a quality lab learning experience for the students by coordinating with appropriate course coordinators and ME faculty.
Provide needed support for the ME faculty lab.
Manage provisioning and purchasing of all equipment and consumables used for the courses in the ME undergraduate and graduate teaching lab facilities, including managing inventory and organization of lab supplies.
Provide general maintenance for ME teaching lab facilities, including equipment repair and calibration.
Develop and maintain hardware/software for lab exercises.
Interface with ME IT staff for hardware/software upgrades and availabilities.
Develop new undergraduate lab exercises in coordination with the course instructors and support teaching of the ME 470 Mechanical Systems Lab.
Create and maintain technical and procedural documentation for lab exercises
Develop and coordinate modernization projects involving the ME teaching lab facilities, including space and equipment, as needed.

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
Preferred Education: Master’s degree
Required Experience: At least 5 – 7 years of work experience or graduate degree in a lab-based field with 2 – 4 years of experience. At least 1 - 3 years of supervisory experience.
Preferred Experience: Understanding of major ME machinery and ability to perform and/or manage all maintenance and repair
Proven ability to evaluate and produce reliable results, problem-solve and troubleshoot complex problems.
Understanding of lab exercise development.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledgeable in the operation of ME lab equipment, including CNC machines, 3D printers, laser cutter, oscilloscopes, power supplies, power tools, drill presses, and hand tools among others.
Knowledgeable in lab safety, test methods, and measurement accuracy.
Familiarity with engineering software, including Solidworks, Labview, and Simulink.
Ability to read and interpret schematics and specifications.
Capable of creating technical/procedural documentation.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel and PowerPoint. Good organizational and managerial skills. Good communication skills, with the ability to interact with all levels of management.
Demonstrated managerial and supervisory ability and well-developed leadership skills.
Ability to maintain and troubleshoot complex problems with laboratory equipment; design and construction capability may be required in some specialty areas.
Comprehensive knowledge and proven ability to apply a wide range of concepts, techniques, and practices to carry out broad laboratory objectives.
