The School of Music seeks a visionary and dynamic leader to build upon a foundation of excellence. The full-time, twelve-month position with a key development component will begin June 10, 2021. The Executive Director reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters.

The Diehn School of Music, a unit of the College of Arts and Letters, has an enrollment of 223 students. At the undergraduate level, the Bachelor of Music degrees include Composition, Music Education, Performance, and the Emphasis in Sound Recording Technology. The Bachelor of Arts in Music and the Music Minor are offered. The Master of Music Education degree with Applied, Research, and Pedagogy concentrations comprise the graduate degree offering.

The Executive Director will lead the outstanding Diehn School of Music faculty, comprised of 17 full-time faculty and 40 adjunct faculty. Several faculty serve as principal musicians with the Virginia Symphony and are established teacher-performers in Southeastern Virginia and beyond.

The Executive Director will:
-Provide visionary leadership of the School of Music, in collaboration with the faculty;
-Lead fundraising efforts to benefit multiple needs in the School of Music; provide oversight of School of Music budget management and allocations;
-Formulate, coordinate, and support student recruitment initiatives in collaboration with the faculty; seek funding for recruitment;
-Lead faculty and staff recruitment and support professional development initiatives and opportunities; supervise and co-sign faculty annual evaluations, promotion and tenure as conducted by the Associate Director; make final recommendations to the College of Arts and Letters Dean;
-Advance the reputation of the School of Music locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally
-Represent and advocate for the School of Music with University administration, at community and school events, with students, and with the public
-Lead and support community outreach and collaboration initiatives with local and regional schools and arts organizations. Current collaborations include the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Virginia Arts Festival, Norfolk Chamber Consort, Virginia Opera, Virginia Wind Symphony and others.
-Advocate for current and future School of Music facility needs
-Maintain and cultivate current donor relationships
-Collaborate with the College of Arts and Letters Dean and the Vice President for University Advancement to seek and create new donor relationships toward the development of funds
-Seek and secure grant opportunities
-Advocate for School of Music equipment needs
-Lead strategic planning processes that align with the university
-Work as the ODU Institutional Representative for NASM, managing annual reports and accreditation details in collaboration with faculty and staff
-Encourage curricular innovation and program development in collaboration with the faculty
-Teach one class per year

Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities
The successful candidate should possess:
-A record of peer-reviewed scholarship and/or creative activity commensurate with an appointment to the rank of Associate or Full Professor
-A minimum of three years of university music unit leadership level or arts organization experience
-Evidence of leadership, excellent communication skills, and consensus-building ability
-Demonstrated success in budget management oversight
-Demonstrated success in student recruitment initiatives
-Demonstrated success in fundraising
-Evidence of successful university teaching experience
-Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing the diversity of the faculty and graduate and undergraduate student populations

Minimum Qualifications - Education or training
Doctorate Degree in Music

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess:
-Four or more years of university music unit leadership or arts organization experience
-Demonstrated leadership in faculty and staff recruitment
-Demonstrated success in cultivating and maintaining donor relationships
-Evidence of successful community outreach and collaboration initiatives with schools and arts organizations
