Job Description

Are you a highly motivated, proactive individual with research experience who is looking to move away from the laboratory into a more external facing, commercially engaged role? Do you have an understanding of the demands of research and innovation support?

The University Academic Strategy 2020-2030 aims to create a research culture and environment that places the University of Leeds at the centre of a global research and innovation community, delivering truly transformational fundamental and challenge-led research that advances knowledge and creates solutions to local, national and global challenges.  Within this, enhancing research income and impact generation through partnership with business is seen as essential.

The University has a strong track record in research translation and manages translational awards from multiple funders with a combined value in excess of £1.5 million p.a. to accelerate impact from its underpinning research. Working with the Innovation Development team you will principally be responsible for managing the Medical Research Council Confidence in Concept programme (MRC CiC).

Ensuring that fundamental science is translated into new therapies, diagnostics and medical devices is central to the MRC mission. The CiC scheme aims to accelerate the transition of health care applicable technologies from discovery science to the early stages of translation by providing locally administered, responsive and flexible funding to support preliminary translational work.

Your motivation will be to encourage and enable academic colleagues to maximise impact from their underpinning research through the translational funding that is available to them. You will seek to make award processes as accessible, and with the least administrative burden, as possible, whilst meeting reporting and auditing requirements.

Working directly with academics, the Commercialisation team and Research and Innovation Development Managers within the Research and Innovation Development team, you will ensure that the outputs from the CiC programme are captured and built on for long-term benefit.

In addition to working with colleagues across the University, you will be part of a small, supportive Innovation Development Team working centrally in the University. As an essential team member, you will contribute the wider University objective of building a translational research culture at the University, enabling academics to see the potential for impact from their research and encouraging collaborative working with partners both within and external to the University.

You will be a highly motivated, proactive individual with research experience who is looking to move away from the laboratory into a more external facing, commercially engaged role.  This is an excellent opportunity to develop a large network both within and outside the University and understand drivers for engagement from both industrial and academic viewpoints.  You should have a biomedical research background with excellent organisational and communication skills and be comfortable working with people from a wide range of backgrounds. Some experience of working with industry would be desirable, it is not essential. The post is available for a period of 6 months in the first instance to cover for a post during maternity leave but may be renewable.

Interviews are expected to take place on 27 May 2021.
