Department Information
The Indiana University School of Dentistry has been advancing oral health in the state and beyond since 1879, when it was founded as the Indiana Dental College. This position is in the Comprehensive Care Department.

Job Summary
This position is being posted at the foundational level, for those who meet the intermediate qualifications, they will be considered at that level.

Foundational:

- Under supervision, provide chair-side assistance to dental students, faculty, and/or licensed dental staff. This includes assisting with chair-side, laboratory, and x-ray procedures. Instructs dental students and other dental assistants on various dental assisting tasks.

- Assists with patient care including setting up instruments, supplies, and materials for necessary procedures.

- Sits chair-side to pass instruments and supports direct patient care as indicated by procedure.

- Complies with infection control procedures by stripping, disinfecting, and bagging unit after patient care provided.

- Enters findings and procedure information in patient chart as directed by faculty and students and reviews entries to ensure accuracy.

- Requests instruments and supplies from other departments as directed by coordinator.

- Inventories and restocks supplies (all) and instruments.



Intermediate:

- Under a moderate degree of supervision, provide chair side assistance to pre-doctoral and graduate dental students, faculty, and licensed dental staff in a specialized setting.

- Provide chair side assistance to dentist by passing instruments, holding devices such as suction tubes, and cleaning patients mouth during and after specialty dental and root canal procedures.

- Assist in administration of local anesthetic agent.

- Take patients' blood pressure and maintain patients' vital statistics.

- Provide preoperative care to patients, prepare patients for surgery by positioning them comfortably and applying topical anesthetics, and provide post-operative care and instructions to patients.

- Instruct graduate students and pre-doctoral dental students on taking digital radiographs, cone beam radiographs and cone beam scans.

- Confirm that instruments are sterilized and working properly and organize them for procedures and/or surgery.

- Ensure that equipment used for dental procedures is sterilized and areas are clean and ready to receive new patients.

- Assist front office in scheduling follow up visits.

Required Qualifications
This position is posted at the Foundational Career Level but may be filled at the Intermediate Career Level depending on the candidate’s qualifications. Foundational Level Requirements:

High school diploma or GED and completion of an accredited dental assisting training program OR six months of dental assisting experience.

Radiology license.

Possesses strong technical aptitude. Demonstrated customer service skills. Strong communication and listening skills. Ability to simultaneously handle multiple priorities.
