Applies professional concepts and skills to support educational initiatives and multi-culturally relevant approaches to the planning, coordination and implementation of sustainability efforts for the Sustainability Office at UCSC.

The Sustainability Programs Manager develops, implements and monitors a wide range of short and long-term, campus-wide plans and projects related to sustainability, with a particular focus on materials management (procurement and zero waste), food systems, health, as well as diversity and inclusion within sustainability. The position is responsible for fostering a culture of sustainability on campus that embraces diverse, multicultural notions of caring for the environment; identifying, coordinating and serving as a catalyst for units and individuals who are implementing sustainability programs; and engaging with executive campus leadership, principal officers, faculty, staff and students to foster sustainability broadly across campus units. This position includes working closely with undergraduate students and empowering their leadership and professional development to advance sustainability. The Sustainability Programs Manager oversees programs that result in institutional change through physical projects and works with a variety of campus stakeholders to research, pilot and advance projects that work to deeply integrate sustainability. Drawing on current best practices within the field, the Sustainability Programs Manager provides expert advice on a variety of sustainability topics to the campus community.

Mission and Goals: The https://sustainability.ucsc.edu/index.html fosters a culture of sustainability at UCSC by actively engaging students, staff, faculty, and community members through education, leadership development, institutional change and behavioral transformation.

• Institutionalize sustainability. Work proactively to integrate sustainability into the core responsibilities and daily activities of faculty, students, and staff.
• Improve environmental performance through the https://sustainabilityplan.ucsc.edu/. The Sustainability Office facilitates and manages UCSC's Campus Sustainability Plan and supports the campus to refine, track, and implement goals and benchmarks.
• Create centralized communication and promote successes. Create a central space for coordination of campus sustainability activities, educational initiatives, noteworthy campus achievements, reporting and national rankings.
• Promote a culture of https://sustainabilityplan.ucsc.edu/campus-sustainability-plan/#learning_and_culture. Work to advance different cultural definitions of how to care for environmental spaces and human communities, promote social justice and anti-racism work, and advance multicultural inclusion in sustainability initiatives across campus.
• Integrate sustainability into the classroom. Build bridges between operations, teaching and research to establish UCSC as a living, learning laboratory in which students can learn and apply sustainability principles and techniques.
In addition to operationally-focused sustainability efforts in carbon neutrality, zero waste, water conservation, and more, the Sustainability Office works to advance environmental sustainability and social justice, with a central focus on advancing multi-culturally relevant and inclusive approaches to caring for the environment. The Sustainability Office critically evaluates its own communications, approaches and priorities to environmental efforts in order to reduce bias and center the voices of UCSC's increasingly diverse campus community.

Job Duties
40%: SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMS MANAGEMENT

• Manages the implementation of goals, strategies and actions related to Materials Management & Food Systems of the Campus Sustainability Plan, with a focus on zero waste, procurement, health/wellness, as well as diversity and inclusion.
• Provides expertise, strategic guidance and support to operational units and academic divisions working towards the achievement of sustainability goals.
• Identifies opportunities for innovation and increased educational efforts to support diversity, social justice, equity, as well as multi-culturally relevant and inclusive sustainability programs.
• Develops strong working relationships to support ongoing partnerships and effective co-programming with key operational, academic and student support units across campus.
• Supports relevant sustainability events and co-develops program content to support the annual Sustainability & Social Justice Inter-Organizational Retreat, Employee Sustainability Certificate program, campus-wide Sustainability Lunch & Learns and other one-off programs as needed.
• Represents the Santa Cruz campus at the University of California systemwide level by participating in relevant committees and working groups.
• Responds to campus and community requests for information, data, committee representation, course guest lectures and educational presentations/workshops as appropriate.
• Updates communication, outreach, social media and website content for relevant programs as needed.

30%: STUDENT SUPERVISION AND TEAM DEVELOPMENT

• Engages with students collaboratively on various projects to support student leadership and initiative in sustainability on campus.
• Directly supervises 6-10 student employees working on a variety of programs to support greener business practices for campus departments and offices, zero waste, health/wellness, food, and inclusive sustainability, including peer-to-peer student educators in on-campus housing.
• In collaboration with the Sustainability Office staff team, coordinates annual student team development, orientation and training efforts.
• Prioritizes ongoing feedback, learning and professional skills development for student employees and interns.
• Oversees modest programming budget for student employees.

20%: POLICY IMPLEMENTATION, PLANNING AND REPORTING

• Supports implementation and annual reporting efforts for the UC systemwide Sustainable Practices Policy.
• Under the direction of the Sustainability Director, works collaboratively on policy development for diversity in sustainability at the UC systemwide and UCSC campus levels.
• In conjunction with the Sustainability Office staff team, supports periodic planning efforts and ongoing implementation of annual priorities identified through the UCSC Campus Sustainability Plan.
• Periodically provides accountability reporting to assess environmental impacts, cost-effectiveness and progress toward goals for various operational, academic, diversity and social equity topics for AASHE-STARS.

10%: GENERAL CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY SUPPORT AND MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

• Works collaboratively as a member of the Sustainability Office staff and student team.
• Represents the Sustainability Office at relevant campus and community events as needed.
• Supports relevant sustainability marketing campaigns and communication strategies.
• Responds with flexibility to shifting priorities at the campus and UC system wide level.
• Advances special projects as needed at the direction of the Sustainability Director.

Required Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's degree and / or equivalent experience / training in environmental science, management, or policy; architecture; engineering; or public health.
• Thorough knowledge of sustainability concepts and practices.
• Demonstrated knowledge in the area of social equity, social justice, diversity, and inclusion.
• Supervisory skills to hire, train, assign work, motivate and manage performance to ensure an engaged and effective team of student employees.
• Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships and inter-departmental partnerships within a team environment.
• Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to develop relevant educational materials and breakdown technical concepts to make effective presentations to small and large groups.
• Organizational abilities to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced work setting.
• Minimum 2 years of relevant professional work experience.
