Job Summary
Performs facilities engineering work in university environment focused on electrical power systems consisting of 138 kV, 46 kV, and 12.5 kV substations, distribution and CoGeneration. Supports operations and maintenance programs in buildings and central utility plants. Participates in the design and construction of new facilities and major renovations. Ensures compliance to National Electric Code, National Electric Safety Code, OSHA standards, and University standards.

Plans, designs and supervises the engineering of power distribution systems using established engineering practices. Performs tests, device investigations and calculations in order to evaluate performance of power distribution and system controls. Prepares reports on performance results and makes recommendations for improvements. Investigates unplanned interruptions using SEL relay incident reports.

Use ABB SCADA platform and SEL RTAC to monitor and control power distribution. Monitor changes in power flow and make SEL relay setting changes to ensure proper relay coordination.

May oversee Utility construction projects including conceptualizing construction schematics, scheduling, estimating budget expenditures, preparing bidding/construction documents and monitoring the construction process. Selects appropriate equipment, materials, techniques, procedures and systems for specific projects.

Works with customers and management to define engineering specifications. May train technicians in engineering techniques. May implement and coordinate a training program for facility users. Evaluate and recommend energy efficiency improvements in support of the University Energy and Sustainability Program. Assists in maintaining a safe and effective work environment.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering field or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education) and two years engineering related experience required. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Experience in electrical power distribution system design, operations, and maintenance on systems with operating voltages up to and including 12.5 kV is required.

Experience with low voltage power systems, electric motors, and variable speed drives required.

A current Utah driver’s license is required for this position.

Ability to walk through out the Campus, climb stairs and ladders, traverse uneven terrain and surfaces.
Ability to wear Electrical safety equipment include Fire Retardant Clothing, face shields, leather gloves, hard hat, safety glasses, and safety shoes.
Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination and registration as an E.I.T. is preferred.

Facilities Operations experience including working knowledge of heating and cooling systems, lighting, building automation and controls, and energy efficiency improvements is preferred. Experience with interior and exterior lighting design and installations is preferred.

Experience with SEL RTAC set up and configuration.
Experience with SKM Power tools power distribution modelling software.
Experience with Utility Metering
