The Department of Internal Medicine is the largest and most complex Department in the Morsani College of Medicine with over 26 Divisions, Programs and Centers/Institutes, total human resources in excess of 1,000, and an annual all-source budget in excess of $143,000,000. The Department's ongoing growth includes the restructure of Cardiovascular Sciences from a separate Department to a Division, support of the microbiome initiative, and the execution of clinical, research and education initiatives focused on COVID-19 and emerging infectious diseases

The mission of the Department is to rank among the elite in the nation in the areas of education, research and patient care. The Department provides education and training for a diverse group of medical students, residents, fellows and health personnel from USF and throughout the world. The Department's research activities are numerous and involve both basic and clinical research activities in all subspecialties of Internal Medicine. Our National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding is in excess of $120 million over the past 3 years.

Patient care occurs in our affiliated hospitals (including Tampa General Hospital, H Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, James A Haley VA Hospital, Florida Hospital) as well as our state-of-the-art ambulatory health care centers. The Department also provides healthcare support and services via contractual arrangements with many diverse organizations. The US News & World Report recent rankings of our subspecialties include Nephrology at 18, and Gastroenterology at 24 and Primary Care at 67.

The Department's faculty represent a group of dedicated physicians that are well-recognized as leaders in all three mission areas.


Our laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms of the human toxoplasmosis agent, apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. The work requires a background in Molecular, Cell biology, Microbiology or Genetics. Applicants will be expected to perform a variety of laboratory analyses, maintain research records effectively, and report to the Principal Investigator (PI) to update research progresses. The position offers an excellent training opportunity to conduct research in dynamic research environment with outstanding resources. The position is grant funded.


Lab Bench Research (manage tissue culture needs for the lab, interact with PI to set goals, experimental design and monitor progress. Analyze experimental data and identify methodological problems, and if required, develop skills in documentation of experimental procedures and outcomes, data interpretation, and methodological problem solving through interactions with academic trainees. Participate in team meetings. Assists PI in training and development of undergraduate researchers.

Participate in manuscript development and technical writing. Conducts literature reviews, searches for innovative laboratory techniques, adapts protocols and procedures to perform laboratory analyses. Maintains logs and records of observations, findings, and results. Presents research findings to broader scientific community by giving a talk at seminars and/or conferences directly related to project(s).

Maintains laboratory equipment, arranges for repair as necessary, orders and inventories laboratory supplies. Supervises compliance with animal handling/procedures, and with lab safety requirements, facilitate and participate in the smooth and collegial operation of the research group.

Performs other duties as assigned.



This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a natural, physical or medical science.
Progressively responsible experience involving scientific laboratory or field work may be substituted for the required college education on a year for year basis.


Master's degree is preferred.


Wet bench laboratory experience, and basic molecular biology skills.
Excellent interpersonal, skills, flexibility, motivation, and ability to work independently.
Experience working with protozoan parasites.
Experience in regulatory compliance, including biosafety and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
Knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite, image acquisition/analysis software, and statistical analysis.
