We are seeking a postdoctoral appointee who will focus on the development of surrogate models, statistical analysis, probabilistic theory and machine learning, particularly as applicable to complex electrical systems. This position resides in the Electrical Models & Simulation team at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) in Albuquerque, NM. As part of our research team, you will work with subject matter experts in a multidisciplinary team to develop, integrate, and apply physics-based methods to develop surrogate models that improve the performance of electrical modeling and simulation codes. Your duties and responsibilities will include: + Develop, implement and apply new surrogate methods, which can include machine-learning (ML) and statistical algorithms, to support various modeling and simulation codes (e.g., analog circuit, radiation transport, electromagnetics) + Contribute effectively on multidisciplinary research teams across organizational boundaries + Publish work results in a technical journal or conference You may work with export controlled information which requires US Person status.

Required:
+ Must have (or soon to complete) PhD degree in electrical engineering, mathematics, computer science, statistics, or related subject (conferred within 3 years prior to employment) + Experience developing surrogate models (neural networks, kernel methods, etc.) and using them within a science or engineering discipline + Experience with UNIX-type operating systems, as well as proficiency with an advanced scientific programming language, such as Python, C++, or Java + Proven track record of achieving results as demonstrated by first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences Due to U.S. export-control laws, only U.S. Persons (U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, asylees, or refugees) are eligible for consideration.

Desired:
+ Demonstrated experience with mathematical and computational techniques for modeling systems of differential equations, combining aspects of machine learning (ML), operator theory, and data science + Demonstrated experience with simulation of one or more of the following: analog and/or digital circuits, RF system designs, embedded systems, and electromagnetic radiation (EMR) effects on electronics + Demonstrated experience with the development or application of large-scale engineering simulations, including distributed or shared memory parallelism and algorithm design + Proficiency in C++, Python, Java software development, parallel programming environments, code verification, and modern software quality practices + Proven track record teaming in an interdisciplinary R&D environment + Proven research community leadership through activities such as participation in student or professional organizations, service on committees, workshop and/or conference organization, and editorial roles + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE security clearance

Department Description:

Department 1355 supports electrical circuit and device simulation through the development of customized modeling & simulation tools for electronic design, analysis and qualification. The application platforms (Xyce and Charon) developed within our department are built on state¿of¿the¿art research in algorithms & physics resulting in accurate, validated models. These high¿fidelity simulation capabilities are integrated into a QMU¿framework to support design variability sensitivity and uncertainty throughout the design, analysis, and qualification cycle.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
