Job Description

Provide academic leadership and general oversight of Burris Laboratory School. The Principal may serve as chairperson.
Burris Laboratory School welcomes applications for a one-year contract as Interim Principal and Chairperson.

Burris Laboratory School was established to provide a stellar K-12 educational environment in which pre-service teachers from Ball State University observe and provide learning opportunities for students with highly effective teachers using innovative instructional strategies aligned with Indiana standards.

The interim Principal and Chairperson of Burris will work with Teachers College and other BSU colleagues in preparing high quality education professionals, provide leadership in supervision and evaluation of curriculum and instruction, professional development of faculty/staff, and action research related to the school and university’s mission, as well as guarantee a high quality curriculum in all grades and subjects. Additional responsibilities include: oversee the school’s budget and compensation of faculty/staff, and communicate and work effectively with stakeholders of Burris Laboratory School, parents, community members, Burris alumni, and university personnel.

Job Function:

Provide academic leadership and general oversight of Burris Laboratory School. The Principal may serve as chairperson.

Minimum Education:

Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Preferred Education:

Doctorate from a regionally accredited institution.

Minimum Experience:

Three years of teaching experience at the elementary, middle, or secondary school level; at least two years of administrative experience
at the building level as the assistant principal or principal.

Preferred Experience:

Experience working with university pre-service and/or student teachers; experience working in a laboratory school.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with Teachers College and other BSU colleagues in preparing high quality education professionals.
  • Assign and review work, orient and train staff, and make recommendations in all areas related to supervision, including but not limited to interviewing and selection, compensation, discipline, performance appraisal, and training and career development of personnel.
  • Provide leadership in supervision and evaluation of curriculum and instruction, professional development of faculty/staff, and action research related to the school and university’s mission.
  • Guarantee a high quality curriculum in all grades and subjects through monitoring of test data, observations and utilizing other sources, and be responsible for making appropriate curricular adjustments and changes when necessary.
  • Oversee the school’s budget and compensation of faculty/staff, making recommendations to the Dean and university leadership and ensuring
    sound fiscal management.
  • Communicate and work effectively with stakeholders of Burris Laboratory School; parents, community members, Burris alumni, and university personnel.
  • Collaborate with the Indiana Academy in terms of facilities, schedules, and personnel.
  • Contribute personally to the intellectual life of the school and university through scholarly efforts.
  • Be responsible for overall supervision and safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the school.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
