You could be the hard-working postdoctoral appointee that we are seeking to work in the area of materials reliability. As such, you will gain experience in solving problems that span a wide range of technical fields and require a broad range of knowledge and expertise with a specific focus on exploring the relationships between materials processing, structure, and corrosion properties. You will work in a collaborative group, coordinating across different engineering fields, to develop a mechanistic understanding of materials aging processes and improved methods for prediction of materials aging effects.One specific area of focus for this position will involve evaluating potential stress corrosion cracking in spent nuclear fuel dry storage canisters. This work will encompass both hands-on crack growth rate measurements, including developing techniques to determine the potential influences of hydrogen interactions, and complementary modeling of corrosion processes.

+ Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field + Outstanding interpersonal skills as evidenced by a record of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at professional scientific conferences (A list of publications should be included in your CV) + Experience with electrochemistry/corrosion testing + Experience with materials characterization and electron microscopy + Experience in computational corrosion modeling and finite element methods + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE security clearance

Proven track record of experimental research and technique development along with experience in the following areas: + Theoretical knowledge base in electrochemical thermodynamics and kinetics + Strong background in stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue, and/or hydrogen embrittlement + Experience in in-situ characterization experiments, such as scanning electrochemical microscopy, scanning kelvin probe microscopy, in-situ Raman spectroscopy, microtomography, and TEM/STEM

The reliability of devices, components, and ultimately systems is directly affected by the properties and interactions of their constituent materials. The prime goal of the Materials Reliability Department is to ensure that effective materials-related information is provided to customers who design and field high-consequence hardware, such that long-term reliability will be attained. Our department's R&D activities focus on the needs of Sandia's Nuclear Weapons program customers. We also provide support to customers in other areas including Energy and Environment and National Security Programs. We have expertise in gas/solid interactions, corrosion and electrochemistry, and the aging and mechanical properties of ceramics, glasses and other brittle materials. We provide this expertise and support to our customers during all phases of design, production, storage, use, and retirement. Security Clearance:
