The Department of Performing Arts seeks an instructor in the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters for the undergraduate-level course:

PERFA 192-01, ACDA Rehearsal

The Department of Performing Arts seeks an instructor for:

Fall 2021, PERFA 192-01 ACDA Rehearsal

Rehearsals time TBD by casting

.25 credit course (.33 faculty workload)

This course will be taught in person, on campus.

The instructor of this course will choreograph and rehearse a tap piece for members of the Saint Mary's College Dance Company. This course prepares students for the performance of a tap piece created with focus on African American culture through a tap dance lens. The instructor will hold an audition the first week of classes and cast the piece by September 3, 2021. The instructor will create a rehearsal schedule consisting of 1.5-2.0 hours per week beginning September 6, 2021 to prepare for performance in the fall dance concert November 21-23, 2021. The rehearsal process is expected to challenge tap dancers while also providing the necessary skills and understanding for an appreciation of the artistic, athletic, and social qualities of the form. Throughout the rehearsal process, students will learn different tap styles such as Musical Theatre Tap and Rhythm Tap plus various concepts surrounding tap including music, history, culture, and the African American influence on the form. The instructor will work with the Dance Production Manager and the Fall Concert Director to schedule spacing and lighting rehearsals during tech week. In addition to this performance, the piece will be performed at an upcoming ACDA conference.

The rehearsal process is expected to challenge tap dancers while also providing the necessary skills and understanding for an appreciation of the artistic, athletic, and social qualities of the form. Throughout the rehearsal process, students will learn different tap styles such as Musical Theatre Tap and Rhythm Tap plus various concepts surrounding tap including music, history, culture, and the African American influence on the form. The instructor will work with the Dance Production Manager and the Spring Concert Director to schedule spacing and lighting rehearsals during tech week.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have experience teaching and choreographing in the African American Diaspora of Tap dance to college age students. The candidate must also be an expert in the style of tap with professional experience in the field including but not limited to training in Broadway musical theatre, Rhythm Tap, lineage from tap legends such as Arlene Kennedy and a dance major from an accredited college or university.
