Job DescriptionThe Kurie Laboratory in the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology, MD Anderson Cancer Center, seeks to recruit talented scientists at the postdoctoral fellowship or non-tenure-track Instructorship level.
Our research focuses on the molecular mechanisms by which lung cancer cells govern pro-metastatic processes in the tumor microenvironment. We have shown that transcriptional programs activated by known metastasis drivers in lung cancer (e.g., p53 deficiency, high expression of EMT-activating transcription factors, and chromosome 1q21.3 amplifications) reprogram the Golgi apparatus to drive the secretion of pro-metastatic effector proteins. Furthermore, we have shown that a collagen modifying enzyme called lysyl hydroxylase 2 has previously unrecognized bi-functional properties (collagen hydroxylation and glucosylation) that drive lung cancer metastasis. Finally, we have isolated a series of clonally related murine lung adenocarcinoma cell lines that have high or low metastatic potential and are leveraging them to understand how lung adenocarcinoma cells metastasize to mediastinal lymph nodes, a poor prognostic feature that defines advanced (Stage III) disease. Collectively, these findings are the basis for three recently funded NIH R01 grants.
Individuals will benefit from training in model development and characterization, including 2- and 3-dimensional cell culture models and autochthonous and orthotopic mouse models that recapitulate features of the tumor microenvironment in human lung adenocarcinoma, and translating those findings to clinically and molecularly annotated human tumor tissue banks. There are educational and mentoring opportunities (e.g., pilot funding, grant-writing courses, and teaching and mentoring experience in our summer undergraduate and graduate internship programs) and extensive opportunities to gain presentation skills at weekly Kurie lab meetings, monthly departmental joint lab meetings, monthly meetings for our programmatic research groups (NCI-funded SPORE, CPRIT-funded MIRA), and annual conferences (e.g., Keystone, Gordon, Cold Spring Harbor, AACR).
Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their peer-reviewed publications and funding. Background in cancer biology and expertise in the design and execution of cell culture and in vivo experiments that incorporate a variety of molecular and cellular techniques is desirable.
