Brief Description of Duties:
The College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, NY seeks a Financial Analyst. The Financial Analyst is a key member of the SUNY ESF Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) team. This dynamic role will provide a candidate the opportunity to gain an understanding of all facets of higher education and state university finances and Business Office department operations. This critical role supports the financial analysis and strategic planning processes at SUNY ESF and assists in providing essential information to university leadership for decision-making support.
The successful candidate must be a highly motivated and detail-oriented investigative thinker with a strong customer service orientation, superior interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities. The incumbent must have excellent analytical skills that will assist in the identification of key issues and the ability to use inductive reasoning in complex situations.
The Financial Analyst will provide financial insight, reporting and analysis of financial data and performance measures, variance analysis, reconciliation of financial accounts, monitoring of key financial and operating metrics, and Supervisory oversight of transactional departments. The incumbent will be responsible for performing specialized analytical duties in the Financial Planning & Analysis department using multiple reporting tools including SUNY BI, OBIEE, BANNER, and Microsoft Excel. This will include generating and executing reports as well as developing reports and dashboards for the campus’ financial leaders. The incumbents will be expected to collect, analyze, and develop data relative to the Budget Office and University, make informed recommendations, and assist in the implementation of financial projects and systems.
Financial Analyst Duties:
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
• Administrator for the Student Government Organizations to include Audit, Reporting, and monitoring administration of all components including: Budget Development, accounting, financial analysis, stakeholder communications, and financial reporting to campus management, primary contact with Student Affairs.
• Organize, analyze, and compile financial data to create reports and dashboards that provide actionable information to campus financial leaders and managers.
• Understand implications of the financial data and offer knowledgeable recommendations based on data analytics performed.
• Partner with CNS to design and institutionalize accurate forecasting and financial planning tools; and testing and/or validating new financial planning tools.
• Work with Director of Business Office to provide information towards college-wide financial planning and budgeting.
• Perform Bank Reconciliations and identify corrective actions for outstanding items.
• Liaison between BO and the Research Foundation for transactional items, contracts, journal entries, etc.
Campus Financials:
• Reconcile and maintain the campus’ monthly financial plan; this includes reconciling each distribution of an initiative or commitment and tracking the out-year liability.
• Reconcile planned resources to the actuals and project the out-year figures in partnership with the related fund manager.
• Reconcile all transactions in the IFR accounts and perform analysis.
• Adjust for accounts receivable and pre-payments.
Finance Office Systems Support:
• Provide functional support for the implementation of the following new systems: Banner Finance module; this includes reconciling transactions, corrective actions, as well as testing and troubleshooting.
• Coordinate with Leadership on the development of policies and best practices for revenue generating activities and analysis.
• Provide system trainings to the ESF community as needed such as the BI reporting tools
• Assist with the creation and maintenance of the campus’ yearly and semester financial plans and revenue to be used for historical and out-year planning.
• Act as the lead Security Administrator for ESF SUNY, Research Foundation, and other systems applicable to the BO and ESF campus community.
Ad-Hoc Modeling & Reporting:
• Utilize knowledge of state reporting systems and business financial knowledge while using data mining and reporting techniques to deliver actionable reports.
• Additional Duties & Responsibilities as Assigned:

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
• Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
• Two years of full-time, professional experience in a financial or analytical environment.
• Experience gathering, analyzing, and evaluating complex information.
• Proven experience with databases, functional querying, and/or data mining.
• Proven proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel to include use of advanced formulas and functions.
• Experience as a supervisor.
Preferred Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
• Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Accounting, Financial Analysis, Finance, or a related analytical discipline.
• Three (3) to Five (5) or more years of full-time, professional experience in a financial or analytical environment.
• Demonstrated experience with improving reporting processes. Experience with Banner Finance.
• Detail-oriented investigative thinker with critical problem-solving skills.
• Higher Education experience.
