Job Summary/Basic Function:
The purpose of this position is to ensure the operational readiness and support of academic laboratories, prepare reagents, assist faculty with lab curriculum development, order chemicals, maintain chemical inventory, deliver safety training, ensure proper chemical storage, maintain and operate scientific equipment and instrumentation, manage student employees, and data management of all academic lab needs.

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees. Typically hold a Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Essential Functions:
● Weekly supply and reagent preparation for all academic laboratory courses.
● Act as onsite support of all academic laboratory troubleshooting.
● Ensure academic laboratory readiness at the beginning of each semester in regards to cleanliness, preparation of supplies and chemicals, and verify all instruments are operational.
● Coordinate laboratory supplies and equipment for chemistry laboratory classes.
● Coordinate with all laboratory instructors/coordinators for schedules and procedures for each academic laboratory course each semester.
● Work with laboratory coordinators implementing changes and improvements to educational laboratory curriculum.
● Maintain detailed procedures for each laboratory preparation.
● Order, prepare, and ship all laboratory kits for online chemistry laboratory courses.
● Manage chemical inventory levels and order all supplies and chemistry for academic laboratories.
● Act as department safety officer for all academic laboratories and report laboratory incidents.
● Work with faculty to provide laboratory equipment, demos, and special requests.
● Maintain up to date safety contracts and incident reports.
● Maintain updated budget reports for all purchases related to academic labs.
● Record all stockroom transactions and track department assets.
● Update and maintain chemical inventory records.
● Monitor Chemstore acquisitions and purchases.
● Conduct safety training courses for laboratory instructors and students each semester
● Identify and dispose of hazardous chemicals and waste in accordance with University, Federal, and State requirements
● Coordinate with University Environmental Health and Safety for hazardous waste disposal as needed
● Act as department emergency evacuation liaison for Science Building.
● Fill in for Laboratory Manager when absent.
● Oversee student employees by making hiring recommendations, assigns and checks work, sets work schedules, and handles performance issues.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
● Think critically – ability to use chemistry knowledge to solve complex problems
● Knowledge of chemistry at B.S level
● Knowledge of instrumentation, troubleshooting techniques, sample preparations and investigative methodology, chemical inventory management, and reporting requirements
● Ability to build trust and maximize relationships – must seamlessly interact with several internal (faculty, staff, and adjust professors) and multiple external groups
● Manage performance- must be able to delegate and assess work performance of subordinates
Communicate effectively – must be able to discuss complex chemistry and scientific topics with several audiences (subordinates researchers, students, University organizations, and vendors)

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years experience or equivalent
