Job Summary
Central Washington University’s (CWU) Piano Technician provides technical services for the Department of Music and university pianos (approximately 100) located in various locations around the university. The employee maintains the pianos to all practice and performance standards to meet the requirements of faculty, students, and guest artists. The technician will also work with the department chair to implement strategic maintenance plans that ensure student’s education experiences are supported by access to uniformly high-quality instruments. Job Duties
Technician Duties:
- Provides specialized piano repair services, including but not limited to tuning, voicing, regulation, repairs, piano action refurbishing, and preventative maintenance
- Prepares concert and recital hall pianos for all performances on a regular schedule
- Provides recommendations to the department chair for the optimal maintenance, long-term care, and oversight of the departmental piano inventory, including the development of schedules for tunings, voicing, and regular scheduled maintenance
- Maintain equipment records and provides expertise regarding the effects of humidity and temperature changes on the piano fleet
- Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds
- Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the supervisor

- Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a recognized program as a piano technician (ex. C.F. Theodore Steinway Technical Academy)
Minimum of three years’ experience maintaining pianos at optimal level (detailed performance tunings, action regulation and refurbishing, voicing, repairs, and preventative maintenance of grand and upright pianos)
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Experience using Word, Excel, e-mail and/or similar software applications to produce written correspondence, reports, receive and respond to e-mail inquiries, tasks, etc.
Effective interpersonal, collaborative, and customer service skills
Knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds
Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences
OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with harpsichord tuning and repair is preferred

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary: $2,990 /month with periodic increases up to $3,381 /month

Schedule/Appointment: Monday - Friday, 9:00am-4:00pm (1 hour lunch) / 11 month cyclic appointment / PSE Bargaining Unit 4

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an indoor office setting with frequent in-person interactions. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks and create/maintain filing systems for departmental records. Evening and weekend work is required due to concert and event scheduling as well as occasional travel.
