The Paul W. Parkison Department of Accounting in the Miller College of Business at Ball State University is seeking an entrepreneurial professional to lead the Department. The department chair reports to the Bryan Dean of the Miller College and is responsible for managing the academic, operational, personnel, budgetary, and student activities within the Department. The ideal candidate will be a tenurable scholar and experienced administrator capable of advocating for the Department and effectively mentoring junior faculty. This individual will exhibit innovativeness in identifying opportunities, and expanding relationships that will position our Department as a partner and source of professional expertise on campus and externally with our alumni, businesses, and community stakeholders. This position offers an opportunity to work with energetic and collegial faculty and staff, and align with current university and college strategic priorities, including growing the graduate program and developing executive education programs.

Job Function:

Serve as chairperson of the department; teach 9 hours during the academic year; engage in scholarship and service.

Minimum Education:

PhD or DBA in Accounting from an AACSB accredited program.

Minimum Experience:

Minimum of five years of tenure-line faculty service and two years of administrative experience which includes, but is not limited to, course scheduling, faculty recruiting and mentoring, preparation of promotion and tenure documents, management of a department advisory board, service on college level committees, management of a departmental budget, curriculum management and faculty performance assessment.

Preferred Experience:

Experience with the AACSB accreditation process, graduate accounting programs, professional engagement and fund raising, and a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the department’s primary spokesperson and representative to the college, university, and external community.
  • Provide leadership in the development and evaluation of academic programs and curriculum within the department.
  • Engage in short- and long-range planning for the department, in cooperation with the faculty. 
  • Assign faculty load. 
  • Act as fiscal agent for the department and allocate funds and resources in a manner designed to achieve excellence. 
  • Support excellence in departmental teaching, scholarship, and service. 
  • Monitor departmental advising, including policies and written materials. 
  • Provide supervision of academic programs, faculty, staff and management of the department office, (e.g. supervision of promotion and tenure, departmental appeals, committee assignments, etc.) 
  • Assign and review work, orient and train staff, and make recommendations in all areas related to supervision, including but not limited to interviewing and selection, compensation, discipline, performance appraisal, and training and career development of personnel. 
  • Teach 9 hours annually. Remain academically qualified as per MCOB policy and ensure department compliance with AACSB accreditation standards. 
  • Keep abreast of recent scholarly developments in the accounting area and incorporate new learning into teaching. Conduct scholarly research and publish results of research in leading academic and professional publications.
  • Actively contribute professional service to the Department of Accounting, the Miller College of Business, Ball State University, and the surrounding community. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
