STATUS:Full-Time (RF Status – 72 Hours/Pay Period)

SHIFT ROTATION: 7P-7A

                                         Holiday Rotation “A”

                                                         Every 3rd Weekend

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Registered Nurse assigned to the Obstetrical Unit will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality care, based upon the nursing process and assessed physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs as appropriate to the age of the patient. The Obstetrics nurse cares for adult, adolescent, and infant patients.

The RN works under the supervision of the Manager – Maternal/Child Care Services. The RN assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and supervises individual care on the nursing unit according to organizational policies and procedures. Provides clinical leadership for patient care. The RN will circulate for C Sections. Within the level of the individual's qualifications, may be assigned to work on other nursing units based upon patient activity and staff distribution. Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Nursing Degree (A.D., Diploma, BSN, etc.) from an accredited School of Nursing.
  2. Licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Ohio.
  3. Previous circulating experience is preferred.
  4. Previous OB experience PREFERRED.
  5. BLS within 3 months. Monitor course and ACLS within 1 year of hire or transfer to OB Department.
  6. Fetal monitoring course and Neonatal Resuscitation within 6 months of hire or transfer to the OB Unit.
  7. Excellent basic clinical skills in delivery of care.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills/ability to work well with people projecting a positive image for the Hospital.
  9. Excellent organizational, communication and detail skills.
  10. Ability to lift moderate weights.

    • Performs a physical, psychosocial and spiritual assessment and re-assessment on all assigned patients as needed and according to established policy.
    • Evaluates for age appropriate behavior, motor skills and psychosocial norms.
    • Recognizes signs and symptoms of abuse, documents finding in the medical record and reports signs and symptoms of abuse according to established policy.
    • Evaluates nutritional and functional status and collaborates with other disciplines to meet patient needs.
    • Identifies and considers physical, spiritual, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, age-specific, educational needs, cultural beliefs incorporating into plan of care and discharge plan.
    • Assesses status of Advanced Directives and follows through according to established policy.
    • Assesses pain appropriately and follows through according to established policy.
    • Communicates effectively with patients, families, and their visitors.
    • Communicates to the patient provider in an appropriate and timely manner with any pertinent change in patient condition.
    • Demonstrates appropriate labor management which includes but is not limited to: assessing amniotic fluid, cervical exams, uterine activity status, and fetal tracing assessment and interventions.
    • Demonstrates appropriate operating room and recovery phase I and II care according to UH and Maternity Center policy.
    • Demonstrates care for the newborn and post-partum patient’s according to UH and Maternity Center policy.
    • Participates fully in various educational programs and updates deemed necessary from the Education Department and the Maternity Center- including but not limited to: lactation/breastfeeding, fetal monitor, epidural, NRP, and post resuscitation stabilization.
    • Participates fully in quality and performance improvement projects as designated by Maternity Center manager.
    • Promotes collaboration inter-professionally with all physicians, providers, nursing and ancillary staff, as well as with patients and their families.
    • Demonstrates critical thinking and is able to prioritize patient care needs.
    • Documents according to policy and standards of care in the specialties of obstetrics and neonatal care.
    • Is aware of policy changes and is compliant with policies and procedures as well as completes assigned learning activities in a timely manner.
  • Maintains ability to perform duties, and is able to carry out duties not usually assigned to the OB RN that are needed to maintain appropriate workflow on the OB unit including but not limited to: putting charts together, preparing newborn screens to be sent out, obtaining birth certificate information, restocking etc.…
