Job Summary

The Research Assistant, Lab Operations will support laboratory operations for an interdisciplinary research team that is working to understand the genetic and cellular basis of normal human brain function and of brain disorders including Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder, and Huntington’s disease. The McCarroll Lab occupies lab space on two different floors in the New Research Building at the Harvard Medical School Longwood Campus. This position will support laboratory operations in both lab spaces.

The McCarroll Lab (http://mccarrolllab.org) studies the human brain using a variety of approaches and technologies, many of which we invented in recent years and/or are further developing. These include approaches for analyzing RNA and proteins in thousands of individual cells simultaneously (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vL7ptq2Dcf0).

Coordination and collaboration within interdisciplinary research teams (that combine biology, statistics and data science) is a key aspect of this research.

Job-Specific Responsibilities


• Support the daily activities of the laboratory by managing the ordering of supplies and materials, ensuring the lab is stocked properly.
• Act as the point of contact for single-cell reagent ordering; work closely with the Associate Director of Operations and project management team to project and track reagent usage so that costs are allocated appropriately.
• Organize the lab freezers; document all tissue upon receipt and develop/maintain a database of samples in the freezers. Perform yearly freezer defrosts.
• Be the certified lab shipper for sample collaborations and core submissions.
• Maintain equipment and equipment service contracts, and serve as a contact for equipment send outs, maintenance, and repairs; organize yearly pipette and equipment calibrations. Respond to equipment alarms.
• Assist the Lab Manager with Health and Safety operations, including attending meetings and preparing the lab for inspections.

Basic Qualifications
College background and one year of related work experience (relevant course work may count toward some, but not all, required work experience).

Additional Qualifications and Skills
A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite preferred. The successful candidate will be extremely organized, detail-oriented, and able to collaborate with a diverse group including laboratory scientists, project managers, professional staff, and academic trainees.

Additional Information

This is a one-year term position with possibility of extension, contingent on work performance and continued funding to support the position.
