Job Description

The research of Dr. Wood’s lab in Carnegie Mellon University's department of Biomedical Engineering is passionate about developing inclusive, multimodal, noninvasive hemodynamic imaging techniques and data analysis to visualize and quantify the management and the treatment of vascular diseases with neural effects and neural disorders, especially sickle cell disease. The lab investigates and evaluates cerebral health biomarkers and risk factors in cerebrovascular disease populations using multimodal hemodynamic and neural imaging with MRI, NIRS and EEG, including the neural pathways of pain and cognition. The focus is to contribute to the scientific community's understanding as to why and how cerebrovascular disease changes cerebral health under various functional states (i.e., sleep, rest, cognition). We intend to use this information to help diagnose and prevent the occurrence of cognitive impairments and complications like stroke.

We are searching for a Research Associate to join our research team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an excellent and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the success of our lab by providing critical support making a significant contribution to sickle cell disease research.

Core responsibilities will include:

Assists in the development and execution of research projects including experimental design, data analysis, and summarizing comprehensive experiment results

Data collection using noninvasive imaging devices being MRI, NIRS, EEG and other physiological apparatuses

Generating publishable data for manuscripts and grants

Data organization and appropriately storing private data internal servers and storage devices

Maintaining an accurate log and record of research studies completed

Coordinating lab complying with accurate certifications for biosafety, biohazard and human subject (CITI) training

Responsible for supervising undergraduate researchers during experiments

General lab maintenance

Working with the Collaborative Laboratory Manager in BME and BME purchasing team to order lab supplies

Tracking orders and supplies for lab

Communicating with collaborators and partners with the PI on behalf of lab matters and business conduct

Executing and documenting payment to participants on studies where applicable

Updating and amending IRB protocols

Acquiring informed consent within human studies; and maintain and respect participant’s confidentiality

Ensure and conduct compliance according to the university’s ethical practices, guidelines and protocols

You should demonstrate:

Bachelor’s degree required in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, neuroscience, or related biomedical and neuroscience fields

Equivalent experience and/or education may be considered in lieu of degree

1-3 years of Research experience

Experience with recording or processing data from noninvasive devices

Experience working with human subjects preferred but not required

Knowledge of biology, physiology, and/or developmental preferred

Laboratory management experience would be preferred

Knowledge of Matlab, Python or similar programming languages

Knowledge of R, SPSS or similar statistical software
