This project aims to study the role of MS4A receptors in the social transmission of food preferences. MS4A receptors are expressed in a population of “necklace” olfactory neurons known to promote the social transmission of food preferences (STFP). Our goal is to test whether MS4A receptors contribute to this form of learning, by assessing whether preferences form following exposure to MS4A ligands. Responsibilities: Carry out experiments and research according to protocols given by lab members. Find and test relevant protocols from primary literature. Analyze data and present results with statistical analyses at lab meetings and during one-on-one meetings with the PI. Write reports/summaries of results and implications in an electronic notebook available to the PI. Read primary literature. Maintain laboratory equipment and inventory. This is an entry-level, research assistant position that will require oversight from lab members, or have direct supervision from the PI. Skills and Qualifications: Analytical and problem-solving skills for troubleshooting experiments. Time management and organizational skills. Collaboration skills to work alongside others in the lab. Technical skills to set up equipment and use laboratory instruments.
College background or equivalent work experience, preferably in a related discipline.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s degree preferred; previous laboratory experience 6 months to 1 year preferred. Analytical and problem-solving skills. Good time management skills. Excellent organization skills to record experiments/work/results in lab notebook Collaboration skills to work with other people in the lab. Technical skills to set up equipment and use laboratory instruments. Experience in some of these experimental procedures is expected and preferred but not required. Previous experience with animal work. Previous experience with chemicals and handling of hazardous materials (like paraformaldehyde).
This is a 12-month term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.
