The Content Strategist and Social Media Writer is a creative writer and problem-solver who owns Ball State University's brand story for all channels, including content creation for social media and web copy writing for all of our division’s clients. The Content Strategist and Social Media Writer will work closely and collaboratively with the division’s social media strategist, senior content strategist and senior digital strategist to execute the needs of clients, as well as promoting our University to media, through social media and on Ball State's website.

Job Function:

The Content Strategist and Social Media Writer is a creative writer and problem-solver who owns Ball State University's brand story for all channels, including content creation for social media and web copy writing for all of our division’s clients. The Content Strategist and Social Media Writer will work closely and collaboratively with the division’s social media strategist, senior content strategist and senior digital strategist to execute the needs of clients, as well as promoting our University to media, through social media and on Ball State's website.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in English, Public Relations, Communications or other related field from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience:

At least three years of writing for a corporation, agency or college/university. In addition to, at least one year of professional experience writing social media content for a corporation, agency, or college/university.

Preferred Experience:

•Demonstrated knowledge of media relations, pitching stories, content
development and copy editing
•Project management experience: managing multiple projects
simultaneously; working effectively and efficiently with individuals and teams
within a diverse environment; and using tools such as WorkFront.
•Experience researching and collecting information, including interviewing
skills, web research skills, and other intelligence gathering techniques
•Demonstrated knowledge of strategic content, communication and marketing principles
•Experience using analytical skills in transforming business insights into
strategic planning
•Experience using content curation skills, transforming content across
platforms to meet different audience needs; ability to visualize the best way to present content
•Evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills
•Experience using client relationship skills, being self-directed and taking
initiatives to completion
•Experience using creative and critical thinking skills, goal setting and
attention to detail
•Demonstrated knowledge of web content best practices
•Experience using Microsoft office

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Compellingly communicate our college’s brand story. Shape and implement the college’s content strategies across multiple mediums.
  • Plan, write and produce high-impact communications for faculty, staff and the general public, including optimized content for websites, email campaigns, social media and media relations. Oversee deliverables across the project life cycle.
  • Serve as a managing editor and writer for the college's newsletters, brochures, advertising campaigns and other communication channels.
  • Support the communication team’s media relations work, including, but not limited to, assisting when assigned with the coordination of interviews, developing and delivering media reports, ensuring the University meets established media placement goals, and proactively pitching story ideas that tell the University’s story digitally and highlight the University’s best experts and researchers.
  • Own and champion the Ball State brand guidelines and ensure that clients and academic units adhere to them.
  • Create content for the Ball State website, ensure timeliness of all information, and coordinate content updates to expand the college’s brand and reach. Utilize SEO and analytics to drive page views, conversions and yield.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with team members, stakeholders and project owners to help define content objectives, needs and outcomes.
  • Collaborate, consult and actively participate in new idea generation, brainstorming concepts, and make recommendations for creative ways to accomplish storytelling goals.
  • Write speeches, public statements and letters at an executive level with a clear understanding and use of language preferred by leadership, including the University’s key messages.
  • Build relationships with and conduct regular interviews with faculty, alumni, key stakeholders, project leads/managers, and team members in order to develop stories for publication and market content. Develop innovative methods to share this content through news stories, social media or ideas yet to be created.
  • Lead or serve on creative cross-functional teams comprised of client service managers, graphic designers, communication specialists, photographers, videographers and vendors.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Serve on the University's Crisis Communications team.
  • Help maintain and fulfill the University’s social media editorial calendar by creating compelling, engaging, purposeful, and on-message content for our primary branded accounts. Work with the division’s social media strategist to schedule content using the University’s social media management tool.
