Assistant Vice President for Communications

Reporting to the Vice President of Enrollment and Communications, the AVP for Communications is responsible for the co-creation and execution of Saint Mary's College of California's marketing, communication and branding strategies. The AVP for Communications plans and directs marketing and communication activities in alignment with and in support of Saint Mary's mission, vision and goals in an effort to advance the academic reputation and overall brand of the college. The AVP for Communications will also serve as a spokesperson for the institution in outreach to external media, including in crisis communications and issues management situations.

  1. Keeps abreast of areas of academic excellence and internal developments and participates in strategic analysis and discussion of issues influencing institutional communication objectives. The director also develops effective relationships with College departments and schools to ensure that their editorial needs are met.

  1. Provides editorial leadership, serves as the editor in chief of the SMC magazine, collaborates with senior director of institutional marketing and content team in guiding quality content intended to drive enrollment, encourage donor support of the College and highlight the academic excellence of Saint Mary's distinguished faculty and strategic plan goals across the College's communication channels, including the website, weekly campus bulletin, social media, e-newsletters, and rich media.
  2. Lead a diverse team of web producers, graphic designers, project managers, marketing and editorial writers, media specialists and videographers. Provide mentorship to staff, both in terms of departmental strategy and professional development.

  1. Cultivate strong working relationships with staff, faculty and students across the university.

  1. Serves as a critical editorial eye and proofreader for strategic OCC projects.
  2. Writes and oversees content for institutional publications, such as advancement communication, course catalogs, marketing collateral, including brochures, social media advertisements, email campaigns, and other materials as required. Collaborates in directing, and contributing to content in various newsletters supporting the College's schools, departments and mission priorities, including KSOE, SEBA, SOLA and SOS, the Alumni Update, Arts newsletter, freshmen and transfer newsletters for Admissions.
  3. Writes talking points, speeches, letters, etc. for College leadership as needed.
  4. Additional responsibilities as needed.

Experience and Qualifications



Required: Bachelor's degree in the liberal arts, journalism, communications, public relations or related field.

Desired: Master's degree.

Required: 7 years of experience managing organizational communications, ideally in higher education or not for profit or similar organization.
