Job Description

Summary

The Department of Neuroscience is seeking a Financial Analyst who will be responsible for managing a large and complex financial portfolio and budget of $34M in annual revenue, perform financial analysis, and prepare financial reporting for department management and faculty.

Job Duties

  • (10%) Performs accounting/financial research as requested by management. For example, investigates budget to actual variance and reports findings to management, or analyzes finances of a particular portfolio in order to assist faculty with the questions “Can I afford to hire one or two researchers with the current funding? For how long, if a new grant is not awarded soon?”
  • (20%) Performs financial analysis and forecasts budgets for 25+ faculty; prepares routine and specialized financial reports that accurately reflect up-to-date research portfolio conditions to permit faculty to anticipate research needs and results. For example, per SAP report, a research grant has a projected balance of $343K after encumbrances. A deeper analysis, based on current spending trends and a rebudget of funds per NIH policy, indicates the projected balance will be negative $8K by the end of FY22.
  • (40%) Oversees and monitors the yearly operating budget for the department; communicates with chair, department management, and faculty to facilitate collection and analysis of financial data.
  • (10%) Manages post-award related tasks such as monitoring expenditures to ensure compliance to budgetary limitations (account reconciliation), transfering expenditures to correct clerical or bookkeeping errors (journal entries), submitting cost transfers, etc.
  • (10%) Monitors expenses and financial transactions for 200+ accounts; majority of these accounts are research grants and contracts that are funded by the federal government.
  • (5%) Approves shopping carts after reviewing compliance with NIH/funding policy.
  • (5%) Monitors purchase orders and adjusts accordingly to prevent blocked payments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
