The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology invites applications for a nine-month, Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Practice. At South Dakota Mines, the Professor of Practice is a non-tenurable rank in which the faculty member integrates academic scholarship with significant practical experience. Professor of Practice faculty contribute to and supplement traditional academic faculty roles through the practical application of their professional experience. The goal is to provide students and faculty with an understanding of the practical applications of a field of study. Faculty in this rank may be assigned teaching, advising, service, and research responsibilities as directly related to their expertise and experience. Rank is dependent on qualifications and the record of the successful candidate. This is a full-time, benefited position. The anticipated start term is August 2022. The successful applicant must be authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
An earned PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field is required. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required. The ideal candidate will have practical industry experience in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, a strong background in aeronautics or astronautics, and teaching experience at the university or college level. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in aircraft stability and control. Expectations will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in aircraft stability and control, rockets & propulsion, space flight mechanics, rockets & mission analysis, atmospheric flight, or other traditional aerospace engineering courses.
The Mechanical Engineering Department takes pride in its excellent educational program. Engineering fundamentals and design are emphasized throughout the undergraduate curriculum. Supported by the Center of Excellence for Advanced Multidisciplinary Projects (CAMP), students compete in several ASME and SAE sponsored national/international competitions. The department offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering, and currently is home to about 600 undergraduate and 30 graduate students.
