Job Description

The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for a full-time Accounting Specialist. Reporting to the Assistant Business Manager, the Accounting Specialist is responsible for day-to-day financial functions of the department to include maintaining accounting records, procurement card verification and purchasing, travel request, travel reimbursements, time entry, accounts payable, purchase requisitions, ledger reconciliation, vendor changes/update requests. Works with contracts, sub-contracts and purchasing. Responsible for a high volume of IRIS transactions including travel, accounts payable, contract entry, purchasing and purchasing card transactions.

Required Qualifications

•High School diploma or GED with 5-6 years accounting and HR experience.

•Knowledge of basic accounting principles.

•Excellent communication, customer service and organization skills.

•Ability to multi-task and work independently.

•Ability to prioritize a heavy workload.

• Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

•Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks based on needs of others and with time-sensitive deadlines.

•Ability to work autonomously as well as within a team environment.

• Sound interpersonal and communication skills.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

•Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business, HR management or related degree with 5-6 years accounting and HR experience.

•Knowledge of State and federal contract and grant financial requirements.

•Working knowledge of UT fiscal and HR policies and procedures.

•Knowledge of financial / personnel management applications such as SAP/IRIS.

•Knowledge of personnel maintenance processes incl. hiring, I-9 e-verification, and USCIS (visa) processes.

• Experience in an academic environment.

• Supervisory experience.

• Experience hiring foreign nationals and communicating with non-native English speakers.

• Human resources specific experience related to recruiting, hiring or employee relations.
