Rider University invites applications for a Lieutenant who will support public safety efforts and the daily functions of the Public Safety Department in the areas of training, accreditation, support services, investigations, operations, and administrative services.  Areas of accountability include management of staff, prioritizing and assigning work; the development and implementation of a comprehensive training program for public safety staff; maintenance of records, reports, and files; and coordination of preliminary investigations. The Lieutenant will support the development and implementation of comprehensive policies and procedures relating to department operations and ensures effective, efficient, and professional delivery of services to the University.  This is a uniformed position, reporting to the Director of Public Safety.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Public Administration, Management, Criminal Justice or a related field.  
  • Successful graduation/completion from a police or security academy.  
  • Minimum of six years (6) of relevant law enforcement, public safety, security, campus safety experience with four (4) years of police/public safety supervisory experience.  
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Strong verbal and written skills, public speaking, and computer use
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
 
In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, candidates with US Military experience of ten years (10) who have achieved the rank of E-5 / its equivalent or higher may apply.  Candidates with ten years (10) of police/public safety, security, campus safety experience and four years (4) police/public safety, security, campus safety experience as supervisor may also apply. 

Position Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience working in a campus or university environment 
  • Experience managing the community policing / community service programs
  • Experience with the accreditation process
  • Experience with data driven public safety methodologies 
  • Certified Public Manager (CPM)
