The Composition Program seeks an adjunct faculty member to teach:
English 005, Argument and Research 2 sections available
Section A: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays 11:45am-12:50pm
Section B: Tuesdays & Thursdays 1:15-2:50pm
These courses will be taught in person, on campus.
In addition to teaching, instructors in the Composition Program are expected to hold regular office hours (a minimum of three hours a week) in order to provide students with support outside of the classroom. Instructors are also expected to participate in faculty development including workshops, class observations, and syllabus collaboration. Course design must follow the program's common syllabus, meeting the requirements described.
Building upon English 4, English 5 continues to develop the rhetorical and critical thinking skills students need to analyze texts and to structure complex arguments. In addition, students practice evaluating sources, exploring arguments through library research, and supporting original theses with appropriate evidence. Through a scaffolded process, students write and revise two or more essays, at least one of which is a substantial research essay that presents an extended argument. This course prepares students for the Writing in the Disciplines courses that they will encounter in their major.
At least two years of experience teaching first-year writing (English 4 or 5) as the instructor of record at SMC or equivalent courses at an accredited institution. Outside applicants (non-BUFM) must also submit evaluations, evidence of course development, and evidence of teaching excellence. Experience must be within the last five years.
Successful completion of graduate coursework in Composition pedagogy
MA in Rhetoric and Composition, PhD in English, MFA in Creative Writing, or a similarly-defined field
