Job Description

Position Overview
The research aide performs pre-established research procedures. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Works under general supervision. Performs research activities and other tasks as necessary in a research environment. Records observations and measurements and reports results. When applicable, is responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining research space and equipment, and assists with receipt and inspection of raw materials along with ordering and stocking of materials and equipment.

Technical support for Wheat Breeding and Genetics Program located at the Aberdeen Research and Extension Center, Aberdeen, ID. Individual will offer general assistance to the breeding staff and to the operations of the breeding activities.
Unit Overview
The Department of Plant Sciences works to advance research and address many local, regional and global challenges such as breeding plants to tolerate drought-stress, developing sustainable cropping practices and conserving plant species for future generations. Our department prepares students for careers in the rapidly changing fields of applied and basic plant sciences and in modern production agriculture.

Position Responsibilities
Key Accountability Assist field-orientated research projects by:
Job Duties
Collecting and recording data following pre-established procedures or protocols.
Operating equipment for weed and disease control in field nurseries.
Rouging field research plots.
Operating combine, binders, and threshers to harvest field trials.
Key Accountability Perform lab duties associated with cultivar development by:
Job Duties
Cleaning seeds after harvesting.
Assessing protein and test weight using NRI machine.
Treating and packaging seeds for planting.
Grinding and testing falling number.
Key Accountability Assist greenhouse research operations by:
Job Duties
Making soil mix, planting, watering, and harvesting plants.
Helping leaf collection for DNA extraction.
Key Accountability Assist with general program operations by:
Job Duties
Assisting in other research projects where necessary.
Position Qualifications
Required Experience
Collecting and recording data following pre-established procedures or protocols.
Using a computer to collect and record data.
Accomplishing goals or completion of projects in a team environment.
Required Education
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Required Licensures, Certifications or other
Have a valid driver’s license and able to successfully pass a driver’s record check.
Have pesticide applicators license or be willing to obtain one within six months of hire.
Additional Preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Agronomy, Soil Science, Crop Science or a related field.
Large field equipment operation, such as combine and trailer.
Hands-on research experiences in small grains cultivar development.
Physical Requirements
Lift, carry or otherwise move materials or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
Working Conditions
This position will be required to work in adverse environmental conditions during the growing seasons.
