What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to be an exceptional quantum information scientist on our multi-disciplinary team. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Perform research and development in quantum information science using ions trapped with micro-fabricated/chip-based devices. + Work with a team to test ground breaking quantum information ideas in a laboratory setting. + Design systems able to perform delicate quantum experiments with maximum stability and flexibility. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + A Ph.D. in physics or engineering, with an emphasis on quantum systems, conferred within five 5) years prior to employment + Experimental experience with quantum information science, i.e. ion trapping, neutral atom trapping, superconductors, semiconductors, impurities, etc. + Experimental experience with lasers, vacuum chamber construction, or cryogenics + Skills programming for experimental control software and data analysis + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE L security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + An established authorship and innovation record, such as peer-reviewed scholarly articles, patents, or technical books + A track record of successful execution of research-and-development projects, including project planning, defining milestones, and delivering results on time + Excellent written and verbal communication skills + Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to collaborate well in a diverse team environment and develop positive relationships + Meticulous attention to detail About Our Team: The Photonic Microsystems Technologies Department exploits science and technology at the nano and micro scales to enable advances in systems for national security. Our engagement is with a broad spectrum of technologies and a diverse field of customers with a successful record of maturing technology from concept to laboratory demo to prototype. The department consists of teams that lead the development and understanding of quantum effects associated with silicon electronic devices, atomic and molecular gases, and trapped electrons, atoms and ions. Most significantly, with a strong presence in the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications (MESA) facility and the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) and working broadly with other Sandia and external organizations, we fabricate electronic structures and devices that use these effects to achieve new levels of performance at the integrated system level. Core technology areas in the department include nanofabrication of silicon devices; electromagnetic modeling; and ion trap and solid-state quantum information science and technology.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
