What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking up to two dedicated and highly motivated post-Bachelor's candidates with strong background and the skills for both standard and challenging chemical synthesis and characterization to work as Laboratory Support Technologists. Background in electrochemical methods/synthesis, fabrication of prototypes, installation/programming of custom lab equipment and/or data analysis is a plus. The selected applicant’s work will directly support proof-of-concept to prototype-level engineering for projects serving a wide variety of customers working in the national interest. Looking for someone with strong technical competence, unwavering desire to complete challenging, novel and complex tasks to enable overall mission success, and work well in similarly motivated small teams of about 5 – 10 (staff, technologists, postdocs and students). On any given day, you may be called on to: + Expand your knowledge and develop unique skills with a wide variety of technologies and fields, including electrochromic devices, electroplating, analytical electrochemistry, radiation sensing polymers, custom batteries, thermal-vacuum environmental testing and even radioactive chemistry/electrochemistry + Work towards gaining new capabilities, such as learning to run and apply innovative equipment for materials characterization and materials testing, such as state-of-the-art SEM/EDS, XRF, XRD, Raman, FTIR, NMR, TEM, ion mills, tribometers and more + Work side-by-side with expert scientists and engineers who will be both mentors and colleagues, teaming to address this broad spectrum of unique science and technology challenges Qualifications We Require: + Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, or other relevant field OR comparable experience + Demonstrated capability or interest in chemical synthesis (organic and/or inorganic) and relevant characterization techniques (e.g., spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, SEM/EDS, NMR etc.) + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Strong sense of mission, integrity, and commitment to the national interest + Demonstrated curiosity about experimental research + Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, learn effectively, and grow in capability in a demanding career focused on mission essentials + Experience in: + synthesizing organic or inorganic materials via chemical and/or electrochemical methods + characterizing chemicals/materials for chemical and structural properties + designing/building custom laboratory equipment + managing a laboratory + programming (MATLAB, Python, C++ or similar) + CAD software (Solidworks, Pro-E or similar) + working with DAQ systems and basic PID/Arduino controller programming + Well-developed hands-on skills + Demonstrated initiative and a willingness to take on considerable individual responsibility + Ability to work effectively in a collaborative teaming environment About Our Team: The Biological and Chemical Sensors Department at Sandia National Laboratories specializes in miniature sensors and sensor-based system for a variety of sensing applications including chemical, biological, and explosives. These sensors and systems can be built into wearable, handheld, UAV, or fixed/installed formats. We have a strong emphasis on nano, micro, and mesoscale fabrication in our R&D including the capability to integrate custom electronics developed in Sandia's MESA facility. We also have state-of-the-art microbiology capabilities to aid in biological sensor development. Our technologies are designed to be non-invasive or minimally invasive, and easy to use in the field or at the point of care.
