Under the guidance of a supervisor within the Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics Group in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division develops theoretical models and performs computer simulations on high performance computers at Advanced Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) in support of ultrafast x-ray spectroscopic and imaging experiments at synchrotron and free-electron laser facilities; participates in beamtimes and writes journal publications. Interacts and performs collaborative research with Argonne and external collaborators and remains knowledgeable of progress in relevant fields of research.
Based on interest and experience, involves in one or more research projects, including:
(a) Developing first-principles theoretical framework for studying x-ray induced ultrafast electron, nuclear and relaxation dynamics in gas and condensed phase systems
(b) Exploring first- and higher-order x-ray coherence and collective phenomena for high-resolution structural/temporal imaging of nonperiodic systems.
Considerable knowledge of and experience in theoretical AMO physics or quantum chemistry; Good skill in conceiving and implementing computational/numerical methods. Familiarity with parallel programming on CPUs/GPUs desirable. Experience with C++, Fortran, and /or python
Interest in ultrafast x-ray science, free-electron laser or synchrotron sources and development of theoretical models to facilitate the interpretation of measurements
Communicate scientific information orally and in written reports and publications
Work independently and effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary research group
This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education at the Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience
