Job Summary
Oberlin College & Conservatory is pleased to announce a new opening for assistant director for data analytics and user experience who will conduct analyses for various programs in the Center of Engaged Liberal Arts (CELA). This is a full-time, Administrative and Professional Staff (A&PS) position. Oberlin excels in experiential and connected learning as central to a transformative liberal arts educational experience. The Center for Engaged Liberal Arts (CELA) helps students catalyze and sustain the integration of curricular and co-curricular experiential learning and develop a compelling personal and professional narrative of their Oberlin education that will help launch them into their careers. CELA closely coordinates affiliated programming (global education, community-based learning, undergraduate research, career development, fellowships, learning portfolio, winter term) in the following key areas:

scaffolded advising across experiential learning programs and courses and strategically identified curricular and co-curricular benchmarks in students’ journey from orientation to graduation;
cultivating partnerships that yield internship, study-away, winter term, community-based learning, research, and other experiential opportunities for students, faculty, and staff;
supporting students in documenting their Oberlin academic and co-curricular journeys through Oberlin’s learning portfolio platform and the development and delivery of program-specific portfolio curricula.


Responsibilities
CELA is a state-of-the-art center housing Oberlin’s experiential learning programs. The Bonner Center, Fellowships and Awards, Career Exploration and Development (CED), Entrepreneurship, Undergraduate Research, Study Away, Learning Portfolio, , and WinterTerm, are all accessible to students in one location, providing one-stop access for all experiential learning programs. The assistant director for data analytics & user experience will provide the CELA programs and community with relevant, clear, and accurate information for communications and decision-making. The ideal candidate will have experience with data analysis, strong written and oral communication skills, a facility with data handling, and the ability to visualize and communicate results effectively. Most importantly, we are looking for someone interested in and understanding higher education, a solid foundation in data analysis, and a willingness to learn new skills.


Essential Job Functions

Develop, launch and oversee Oberlin’s career mentoring platform facilitating the connections between current students and alumni in career fields, demographic and geographic preference, and community affiliation. In doing so, the Assistant Director will review potential software providers, benchmark mentoring programs at peer institutions, launch a pilot mentor program and meet ongoing growth goals
Manage a committee to serve as advising board with Alumni Relations for program development and connect undergraduate mentoring to the emerging alumni career affinity network
Serve as a Data Analyst for the Center of Engaged Liberal Arts (CELA) interpreting data to provide actionable insight to inform business decisions for all departments within CELA. This includes the Bonner Center, Career Exploration & Development, Fellowships and Awards, Undergraduate Research, Study Away, and Winter Term, Entrepreneurship
Analyze data using statistical techniques and interpret complex data sets in order to identify patterns, data quality issues, trends, etc. The primary goal is to assist department directors to spot trends and identify actionable steps that can be taken to improve operations and outreach.
Support CELA by designing dashboards (using Tableau, Power BI, Google Data Studio, Excel, or similar tool) for data analysis to promote data visualization, identify trends, share insights, review historical data, and identify key performance indicators (KPIs).
Maintain data warehouse/data analytics platforms so that data can effectively be mined for information across multiple technical systems.
Work with CELA departments to better understand their data by suggesting specific analysis and by responding to specific requests for permanent and ad hoc reports.
Evaluate and improve existing systems that are in place and collaborate with teams across CELA to integrate these new systems to streamline workflow and College processes.
Conduct unit tests and develop database queries to analyze anomalies and troubleshoot any issues that arise.
Work with the Institutional Research & Planning team to identify data integrity/quality issues within the data repository and resolve.
Support assessment of experiential learning goals for institutional accreditation.
Support assessment needs in support of divisional and institutional DEI goals.

Data Analysis & User Experience 55%

Analyze data using statistical techniques to respond to questions from CELA managers
Respond to incoming questions, work with end users to understand the requirements, and determine the kind of solution needed to resolve the issue
Develop expertise on data from various campus systems and develop a method to refresh the data to provide the information to CELA managers.
This may involve modifying the existing vendor data warehouse with assistance from Institutional Research staff
Generate graphs, charts, heat maps, and other visualizations to assist end users in understanding the meaning behind the data
Analyze data using statistical methods and models to answer detailed business questions and provide actionable insight
Work with CELA technical staff to develop ad-hoc queries to provide answers to data questions and to support larger initiatives |

Dashboard Development & Testing 25%

Work with end users to identify dashboard and reporting needs in addition to data evaluations and analysisDesign rich data visualizations to communicate complex ideas to leadership
Develop specifications and proposed layouts in partnership with requestorPerform detailed testing process to ensure accuracy of reports
Work with Advancement Operations to provide documentation, training, and technical and programming support

Process Improvement & Data Quality. 20%

Review data anomalies and work with CELA team to correct issues causing concerns with reliability and trust of reporting and dashboards
Review existing business and data flow processes and provide suggestions for improvement, to include working with colleagues on changesIdentify new data that might be helpful to add to improve reporting and analysis results
Collaborate with other campus staff to ensure data integrity and provide robust and dependable data transfers.
Work with CELA staff to archive reports and data as needed to recreate monthly, quarterly, and annual totals.Participate in data governance issues as required.


Marginal Job Functions
Required Qualifications
Education and/or Training: Experience: Minimum of 3 years of data analytics

BS in Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, Information Science, or other relevant field, with a minimum of 3 years of technical experience in an office environment.

Experience with tools such as Tableau, Google Data Studio, R, Excel, or PowerBI preferred
Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for analyzing datasets (R, Excel, SPSS, SAS etc.)
Demonstrated experience handling large and complex data sets
Technical expertise creating models to forecast trends and in data mining and segmentation techniques is a plus
Experience working in a higher education or non-profit environment is a plus.
Experience with marketing and sales or equivalent field in which data-driven approaches are derived is a plus
Adept at data visualization and analysis in addition to writing queries, report writing, and presenting findings
Experience with improving data quality and data integrity preferred
Strong attention to detail, ability to work in a team environment, and ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
Knowledge and proficiency creating data visualization dashboards using Tableau or similar tools.
Strong analytical and data analysis skills.
Strong collaborative skills along with excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Self-directed, with the ability to master new technologies and systems with minimal supervision.
Knowledge and proficiency using Oracle PL/SQL programming language or of advancement-related software and business processes a plus.
