Position Description
Onsite laboratory manager directing the day-to-day operations of a large, internationally recognized Molecular Neurobiology Research Laboratory at Harvard Medical School. This person will be responsible for maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the work within the laboratory and will manage compliance with chemical, microbiological, animal care use as well as general laboratory safety regulations. This position calls for a responsible, conscientious and detail-oriented individual committed to facilitating the research goals of this hard-working group of investigators in a friendly yet authoritative manner. Position may also participate in the research efforts of the laboratory and occasionally contribute to scientific manuscripts.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
Ensuring compliance with institutional and federal guidelines in health and safety
Writing animal protocols and ensure compliance with federal guidelines with respect to animal care regulations
Providing training and supervision in these areas in the name of the principal investigator and be able to command the respect of technicians and highly scientifically trained doctoral level scientists
Maintenance of lab reagents (such as plasmids and antibodies), their databases, and handling requests. Maintenance of equipment, infrastructure, and space allocation
Onboarding of new personnel, including ensuring their training and compliance with Harvard and Federal guidelines
Communication with vendors. Ordering of supplies, maintenance of inventories, service contracts, repairs of equipment while maintaining attention to the sources and uses of grant funds for these needs
Initiation and management of orders using B2P and other methods, track supplies and expenditures on a daily/weekly/monthly basis
Potential to handle financial activities such as monitoring budgets and communicating with principal investigator about spending levels and spending patterns
Basic Qualifications
B.S. in life sciences (i.e. Chemistry, Biology)
5+ years’ experience in a laboratory management setting required
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Experience in oversight of laboratory personnel and in enforcing policies and regulatory guidelines with respect to safety of lab personnel
Preferred experience in academic lab managements
Prior research experience in molecular biology and/or neurobiology
Experience with mouse research
Training experience
Distinguished record of safety practice and maintaining compliance
Good problem-solving skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
Attention to detail and have excellent organizational skills
Ability to exhibit a level of maturity and competence to maintain authority in a large laboratory
Additional Information
This is a 12-month term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.
Offer contingent upon successful completion of a pre-placement medical evaluation.
This is an in-person position based on our campus in Boston.
