Summary

The Department of Pediatrics at the Children's Nutrition Research Center is seeking a skilled Research Technician III. The candidate will be working with Dr. Lanlan Shen at the Children's Nutrition Research Center to provide overall lab management. Preferred candidates may have a minimum of an Associate of Science degree with at least 6 years of research experience in histology and animal husbandry in lieu of a bachelor's degree requirement.

 

How has this work been done in the past: There was no staff level primary person performing coordination of the laboratory.  The PI was handling this task, but needs assistance so she can free up dedicated time to write grants, generate sponsor progress reports, and submit publications to meet BCM, Departmental, USDA-ARS, and CNRC metrics. PI needs time to write additional grants, generate sponsor progress reports, and submit publications.

Job Duties

  • Supports 100% general research laboratory with animals studies, and general laboratory organization for PI, postdocs, and technicians.
  • Coordinates the diverse and separate research grant projects in the lab into a cohesive approach to ordering supplies, equipment maintenance,  animal husbandry databases, track research project deadlines, BCM Environmental Safety, BCM CCM, and be the primary point of contact for lab inquiries.
  • Maintains and purchases lab equipment and supplies.
  • Instructs laboratory technicians in the proper use and care of equipment and supplies.
  • Assists PI and fellows with grant, manuscript, animal and human subject protocol preparation and submission. 
  • Manages and coordinates purchasing of laboratory supplies, and maintenance of necessary reagents and supplies to support timely laboratory analysis. 
  • Maintains, logs operation of, and trains on Pyro Mark lab equipment and other sensitive laboratory instruments. 
  • Processes and records human samples in accordance with IRB protocols.
  • Assists PI with IACUC compliance and laboratory inspections.
  • Serves as the liaison between the lab and BCM Environmental Safety Officers for all laboratory protocols, including chemical, biological, and OHP safety protocols. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • 6 years of research experience with animal husbandry, histology staining, cell cultures, and/or studies of intestinal organoids.
