Serves as the lead attorney of the Norman Campus, and has multi-campus responsibilities and manages the assigned campus's legal division under the General Counsel's direction. In the absence of the General Counsel, is fully responsible for their applicable campus and other duties that the General Counsel may assign. Performs the duties of the General Counsel as and when required. Represents the Office of Legal Counsel at meetings of the Board of Regents or other bodies, as assigned. Supervises, trains, sets salaries, allocates work, and manages the performance of legal and support staff. Coordinates the activities of and consults with outside attorneys as appropriate. Develops and manages budgets and operating procedures, and establishes working guidelines to include intake procedures, work priorities, turnaround times, quality standards, and other operational benchmarks. Advises on complex, multi campus legal assignments and provides legal advice and consultation to the Board of Regents and University President, the administration and faculty. Ensures that all activities of the Office of Legal Counsel are legally supported and carried out in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and rules. Represents the University before hearing panels as well as administrative and judicial bodies.  Assists in protecting an organization's legal interest and maintaining its operations within the scope established by law. Provides hands-on counsel to all levels of executive staff, including providing guidance to less experienced attorneys. Identifies and analyzes legal issues, drafts key documents, presents clear recommendations to top management, and assures legal compliance. Manages attorneys in several legal specializations including tax, litigation, acquisitions, employment, and Intellectual Property. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Job Requirements

Required Education: Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited institution

  • 12 years or more experience as an attorney.

  • Ability to build consensus to address challenges and opportunities
  • Ability to supervise staff and communicate directions and expectations effectively

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Oklahoma

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to engage in repetitive motion and communicate effectively
  • Standard Office Environment.

  • Prior OU experience
