The Oklahoma Mesonet collects and disseminates weather data from 170+ automated weather stations across the state. Located in the National Weather Center, the Mesonet Field group manages the physical operations of the sensing sites as well as all associated communications networks.

Typical duties:

  • Actively monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot VHF and IP communication systems for Mesonet data collection
  • Maintain station and sensor documentation
  • Repair and maintain remote technical equipment
  • Installation and removal of infrastructure
 

Job Requirements

Required Education: Associate Degree OR equivalent combination of education and experience, AND: 

  • 30 months experience in Engineering, Electronics or Meteorology.

Skills:

  • Ability to speak, read and write clear, concise English
  • Ability to accurately read and understand written materials and instructions
  • Advanced computer skills with wide knowledge of business software
  • Basic math skills
  • Read and understand complex written materials such as blueprints, metrics or technical manuals
  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Able to produce reports and complete work within deadlines
  • Strong initiative to solve problems
  • Able to work well with interdepartmental teams and initiatives
  • Must be able to read and interpret policy, as well as state and federal regulations

Certifications:

  • Valid Class D Driver's License to drive an OU vehicle

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb ladders and communication towers (up to 100 feet)
  • Ability to drive vehicle for extended periods of time
  • Working outside for long periods in all weather conditions
  • Lift up to 50 pounds
  • Vision adequate enough to see computer screen and printed numbers
  • Dexterity for working with small tools
  • Ability to communicate over telephone in effective manner
  • Ability to walk for short or extended time periods
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions including movements of the hands, wrists or fingers

Departmental Preferences:

  • Electrical and mechanical aptitude
  • Experience working with communication technology
  • Experience with remote weather station maintenance
  • Programming skills
