The Department of Cell Biology has an outstanding opportunity for a Staff Research Assistant focused on cell biology and human genetics. This position is perfect if you are thinking about graduate/medical/other professional school and would like laboratory experience OR looking for a long-term laboratory position with the possibility for advancement.

About the Van De Weghe Lab: The laboratory conducts NIH-funded research focused on understanding how the cellular organelles, cilia, work normally and what goes wrong in disease. We employ both human cell systems and the green algae, Chlamydomonas, to probe function of ciliary proteins. We use microscopy, genome engineering, biochemical isolation of cilia, functional assays, and molecular biology approaches. We’re a new group committed to fostering diversity in the fields of cellular biology and genetics. We’re looking for an enthusiastic addition to our growing group. Duties:  

  • Provides assistance to a research staff by conducting simple research experiments, collecting data and samples, keeping records, conducting literature searches, analyzing data, and preparing reports.
  • Conducts simple research and laboratory analysis.
  • Collects various forms of data pertaining to the research project or projects, which could include database information patient consent forms, and/or hard files. Interprets and analyzes data and discusses with principal investigator.
  • Prepares reports concerning the progress of the project.
  • Keeps detailed logs of all research related activities.
  • Conducts literature searches.
  • Conducts data analyses, interprets results, summarizes findings, and presents to Principal Investigator.
  • Tissue culture; maintain human cell lines using sterile techniques.
  • Chlamydomonas culture; maintain algae using sterile techniques.
  • CRISPR/Cas9 genome engineering; use genome engineering techniques to model disease variants and introduce fluorescent proteins.  
  • Microscopy; analyze cell lines for defects using immunofluorescence, live cell tracking.
  • Basic molecular biology techniques; nucleic acid isolation, PCR, qPCR, western blotting and other established techniques.  
  • Stay up to date on research related to their projects by reading the literature and attending selected seminars.
  • Perform other research duties as required such as protocol implementation and troubleshooting.
  • Data presentation; summarize research results in presentations for lab meetings as well as for use in public presentations and publications.
  • Interprets and analyzes data and discusses with principal investigator.
  • Maintain appropriate research documentation and databases.
  • Lab safety; support strict lab safety practices as related to wet chemicals, compressed gases, tissue culture, and hazardous materials, and support the laboratory's compliance with federal and state safety regulations.
  • Ordering; ensure that all supplies for the lab are stocked accordingly.
  • Lab organization; help keep the laboratory tidy and organized.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
 

Job Requirements

Education:  Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science, Chemistry, or Physical Science or related field
 
Experience:  12 months research laboratory experience
 
Equivalency:  Will accept 48 months equivalent experience in lieu of the Bachelor's Degree for a total of 60 months research experience or an Associate's Degree and 24 months research experience for a total of 36 months experience
 
Skills & Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of how to safely handle and dispose of biohazardous materials or chemicals following Federal, State, and University regulations and guidelines
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and regulations (will supplement if necessary)
  • Proficient with computers including data software and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, and Word)
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to be detail oriented
  • Ability to collect and analyze data
  • Foster inclusive laboratory environment
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills
Working Conditions:
  • Physical: Standing for prolonged periods. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/ containers/ machinery, sometimes involving repetitive motions. Visual acuity sufficient to visually confirm sub-microliter amounts of clear liquid in pipette tips and accurately pipette into tiny wells. Reaching, bending, stooping, and walking. Wearing appropriate protective gear when required, including mask, gloves, safety goggles, etc.
  • Environmental:  Laboratory Environment. Exposure to chemicals, biohazardous materials, carcinogens, or other hazardous materials.
