Job Description

Summary

This position involves conducting scientific research at Baylor College of Medicine in the lab of Prof. Ankit Patel. The appointee will be expected to do algorithmic and theoretical research in the field of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, with potential applications in Neuroscience, Biosciences and Medicine.

 

Specifically, we plan to study the properties of specialized Neural Networks (such as Recurrent Neural Networks, and Actor-Critic Networks) using a variety of theoretical approaches including Statistical Learning Theory, Probabilistic Modelling, Algorithm Design and Graph Theory, Information Theory, Dynamical Systems Theory, Control Theory, Optimization Theory, and Random Matrix Theory. Furthermore, we plan to collaborate with Neuroscientists, Bioscientists and Medical scientists to apply our work to enable advances in science and medicine. This position includes allowances for research expenses, including computing resources, participant costs, travel and subsistence costs towards project-specific travel, including conferences and scientific meetings.

Job Duties

  • Develop theoretical approaches and conduct empirical experiments supporting research aims.
  • Collect and analyze data, conduct literature reviews, participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations.
  • Assist with grant writing.
  • Collaborate and communicate with PI, lab members and collaborators.
  • Oversee team’s junior members.
  • Other duties such as attending scientific conferences and meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field. 
  • Three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD ( with a specialization relevant to the planned research area, i.e. artificial intelligence or machine learning, with applications in Biosciences.
  • Programming and data analysis skills in Python, and scientific manuscript preparation using LaTeX.
  • Experience with the design, implementation and analysis of machine learning models, deep reinforcement learning agents, and machine learning systems for analyzing large datasets, including time-series and medical/scientific data.
  • Prior experience publishing papers in conferences and journals.
  • More desirable experience: Prior experience collaborating with researchers in Neuroscience, Biosciences or Medicine. Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Strong interest in pursuing a scientific career.
  • Strong research project management skills.
